Pros: | Well made, protects from flare and impact | Cons: | Some issues when used with a circular polarizer | | Lens hoods have two primary functions: flare reduction and protection. The PH-S49 performs this task well. It is a clip-on type square hood that snaps on the front of the SMC Pentax M 35/2 lens. According to the information on the hood it will also fit the M and A series 1:28-35 28mm as well as the M 1:2-2.8 35mm lenses.
It is possible to use the PH-S49 hood in conjunction with a circular polarizer. It can be a little awkward however. The hood will turn with the polarizer if you are not careful and might result in some vignetting. This is the only potential problem I can see with this hood. I had no vignetting issues with normal UV filters.
The PH-S49 is a specialty hood designed specifically for use with the M and A series 28 and 35mm lenses. It does reduce flare and provides some protection. As such I can recommend it to owners of these Pentax lenses.
The PH-S49, oddly, shares the same designation in the Pentax catalogue as the square hood designed for use with M 50/1.4. I suspect the S49 refers to the 49mm filter size that is common to many M series lenses. I have the 50mm hood as well and it is quite a bit deeper than that designed for the 35mm. The hood designed for the 50mm is clearly stamped Standard Lens: 1:1.4-1.7 50mm.
The hood for the M 28 and 35mm is stamped SMC Pentax 1:28-35 28mm and 1:2-2.8 35mm.
Potential buyers should be aware of this and make sure they are getting the desired hood.
