Pros: | Well made, protects from flare and impact | Cons: | Issues with polarizers | | Lens hoods have two primary functions: flare reduction and protection. Pictures taken with a lens hood installed can have richer colours, deeper saturation as the hood helps prevent light from hitting the front lens element from the sides - reducing contrast and creating flare.
Of course with a wide-angle lens such as the K 24/2.8 the hood has to be short to prevent vignetting. As a result the protection side of the above equation is somewhat reduced as the hood sits so close to the front element. Fingers can easily smudge the front element even with this hood in place. That said it does provide some protection from impact.
It is possible to use the PH-S52 hood in conjunction with a circular polarizer. It can be a little awkward however. The hood will turn with the polarizer if you are not careful and might result in some vignetting. This is the only potential problem I can see with this hood. I had no vignetting issues with normal UV filters.
The PH-S52 is a specialty hood designed specifically for use with the K and A series 24/2.8 mm lenses. It does reduce flare and provides some protection. As such I can recommend it to owners of Pentax 24mm lenses.
