Pros: | Magnification | Cons: | Fringing | | Bought for 400 USD with a flash and FA 100 macro. Can't say that I was disappointed. Very useful.
The good part:
- excellent magnification;
- easy installation and quick removal;
- good contrast and overall image quality;
- metal build and smc coated;
- can be used hand hold (camera with flash, lens and T9-2X).
The not so good part:
- purple fringing (heavy);
- noticeable decrease in sharpness;
- rare and pricey;
- ring flash is needed to be attached to.
Recommendation.
The flashlight from AF 160FC (two semicircles) is better than from AF 140C (4 lights). Modeling light is helpful.
Best results are from FA 100 and D-FA 100 WR. (exposure with PKA lenses needs to be manually calibrated).
Diaphragm - 16-20.
Use it with HD Pentax-DA 1.4x AW AF Rear Converter for better results.
I cant say the results are stunning (or that my photos are good), but they are definitely usable.
Pomegranate grain

2 euro coin
Moss
20 kopecks
Dead small insect (probably some kind of fly)
All photos above are shot with D-FA 100 WR + DA 1.4x + T9-2X.

Pros: | Powerful | Cons: | Expensive | | I am rating this accessory based on my initial use. It produces 2x images without losing IQ, that's to my eye. The dof is ubber thin so it is much more difficult to shoot at 2:1 than without it at 1:1. At least twice as difficult but it can be done. Note the max dof you can achieve at 2:1 with this lens will limit its use in wildlife macro photography. The workmanship is flawless in both the glass and the machining of the metal.
The adapter screws into filter threads in the flash. The lens mounts to the adapter with a quarter turn. This makes it easy to mount and dismount very quickly. The lens protrudes a half inch or so behind the adapter so the T9-2X cannot be directly mounted to a lens

Working Distance with & without T9-2X:
DFA 100mm macro with T9-2X at 2:1 the working distance = 2.25 inches.
DFA100mm macro without T9-2X at 1:1 the working distance = 3.8 inches.
Note working distance measured from the object to front plane of AF160 ring flash.
It is labeled "SMC PENTAX CLOSE-UP LENS T9-2X". It has a focusing range from 2.25-3.8 inches mounted on a 160 flash & DFA WR 100mm lens, hence the name "Close-up Lens".

It was very difficult to find technical information on the T9-2X. The only place I found that had marketed this lens was Pentax Denmark. I think theT9-2X was sold through though Pentax Medical as a kit, that is what my research leads me to believe.

The build quality is excellent. It has the power I needed outdoors tonight, and the zoom function worked flawlessly for some really amazing long-distance shots. If you get this, you won't be disappointed. | |
