Pros: | The ultimate low level camera support | Cons: | For me none so far... | | I needed a quick simple low level method of camera support, while still retaining as much functionality as possible. This product while maybe not be cheapest, it certainly does the job. It's made of aircraft-grade aluminium and titanium, the 5mm-thick Max is perfect for heavy DSLRs and full-sized video cameras, large lenses, bulky flashes and accessories weighing up to 300lbs.
Key features are:
Fibreglass reinforced nylon removable "bayonet style" storage box that holds four 1/4-20 spike feet. Small magnets hold spikes when stored.
Five 1/4-20 threaded holes to allow use of spike feet in configurations of one, two, three, or four at a time.
Two 2-inch belt slots to secure to any cylindrical object or to tape onto floors for remote camera setups.
Made of 6061 black anodised aircraft-grade aluminium. 5 mm thick. 5.25 x 7.75”
1/4-20 and 3/8-16 accessory threaded holes for attachment to tripods or quick-release devices.
3/8-16 TA2 titanium photographic bolt drilled, countersunk and welded in place for large tripod ball heads, even with spike feet in place.
Two nail holes for permanent or semi-permanent mounting.
Weight: 13 ounces, including spikes and storage box.
Max comes with the Base Plate, four spike feet and removable storage box, 1/4" - 1/4" male-to-male cross nut, a microfibre pouch, and a 5 year warranty.
I also purchased the Multi Accessory Kit ($29) to go with it, which contains these handy items: a 3" long 3/8"-1/4" female to female spigot adapter for portable and studio lighting; a silicone pad 4"x6" 2mm thick to give a secure sticky grip on flat surfaces, a 36-inch 1.5" wide cinch strap for securing your Platypod on to freestanding objects (trees and wide poles) and a 1.5" anodised aluminium 0.5" riser 3/8"-1/4" female socket-male bolt that accommodates more tripod ball heads and a 41/4" x 61/4" draw string pouch to keep them all in.
Update 08/08/2022: But now rather than keep switching the heads about, I've added an additional BH-55 with 60MM Lever Release Clamp B2-LR-II. This will from now on be permanently attached to my Platypod-Max. Rather than my preferred Screw Knob Release, I've gone for the Lever Release, purely because it's easier to operate at the lower mounting levels offered by the Platypod.
