Sunpak produced (or re-branded) different versions of their lens filter lineup. Platinum Plus, identified by “CF” model number and blister packaging, is the cheap low-end with substandard quality and widely available at most discount chain stores. Picture Plus, on the other hand, is identified by “DF” part number and packaged in a box. It is their high quality lineup and usually available online only. This review is for the UV/Haze Sunpak Picture Plus “DF” model.
Earlier versions were made in Japan while newer ones are made in China. I have seen both. Product appears to be well made with good quality glass and does not seem to show any signs of imperfections. I have two of these filters; one 52mm for my DA-L 18-55mm and a 58mm on a DA-L 55-300mm lens. Filters thread smoothly on/off without that "gritty" feel. Viewed from an angle, reflections from both sides cast a green tint which indicates that these filters are actually multi-coated.
I’ve done a few test shots with both lenses and as far as I can tell, there doesn’t seem to be any image differences, degradation or even flare with these filters on. I’ve even stacked a CPL on top and surprisingly still manage to get good IQ.
Most, if not all, of today’s lenses are already UV coated and do not need additional UV filtering. I use these filters mostly for lens protection especially on “harsh” shooting environment. I have been satisfied with these Sunpak Picture Plus UV/Haze filters so far and in my opinion, they are an excellent lens front element protector and well worth the $12.50 cost.
