Pentax 645Z Firmware v1.30 Released

New LCD display features

By PF Staff in Firmware Updates on Jun 29, 2017

Ricoh Imaging has just released a new feature-enhancing firmware update for the Pentax 645Z, which follows in the footsteps of other recent updates that focus on keeping the functionality of top-tier models current.

This update includes features that further enhance user-friendliness for astrophotography and when shooting in strong sunlight.  Like all Pentax firmware updates, it is cumulative and also includes the contents of all previous updates.

This updates adds the following two features which originally debuted on the new Pentax K-70 and Pentax K-1, respectively:

  • LCD Night Vision Mode
The backlight is dimmed and the LCD adopts a red color palette to allow you to operate the camera in darkness without being blinded.

  • LCD Outdoor View Setting
Allows the LCD backlight to be quickly dimmed or made brighter to make it easier to see in the dark or in harsh sunlight, respectively.

A supplement to the user manual, which describes these new functions, has been published online.

Pentax K-1 Firmware v1.41 Released

Improved tethering support via Image Transmitter

By PF Staff in Firmware Updates on Apr 20, 2017

Ricoh Imaging has just enhanced the tethering functionality of the Pentax K-1 (and 645Z) through a firmware update for the camera and a software update for Image Transmitter 2.

The key improvement in these updates is the ability to change many new settings while tethering, including the drive mode, image format, and focus fine tuning.  Note that you must already own a copy of Image Transmitter 2 in order to use this update— the software is not free and is available for purchase from Pentax outlets.  You can install the latest firmware even if you don't plan on using Image Transmitter, however, as the firmware is cumulative and includes the many other exciting features added by Pentax to date, such as electronic front curtain shutter or night vision mode.

Pentax K-50 Firmware v1.10 Released

Adds KAF4 mount support and enables use of the 55-300mm PLM lens

By PF Staff in Firmware Updates on Nov 24, 2016

After a long period of uncertainty, Ricoh Imaging has released a firmware update for the Pentax K-50 to add support for the new KAF4 lens mount. KAF4 lenses lack a mechanical aperture stop-down lever; they instead require electronic actuation of the aperture.  Before this firmware update, the K-50 was not able to issue the necessary commands to operate this system.

Thanks to this update, the new silent-focusing DA 55-300mm PLM lens can be used with the K-50.  We strongly recommend this lens over its screwdrive AF predecessor, as it focuses more quickly and allows for more precise manual adjustments without making any compromises.

Download the K-50 firmware from the official Pentax firmware site.

Full Pentax K-50 v1.10 firmware notes:

  • Corresponded to [KAF4 lens mount] that is equipped with an electromagnetic diaphragm control system.
Enable new lens HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mmF4.5-6.3ED PLM WR RE to shoot stable by updating firmware.
  • Improved stability for general performance.

*Contents of [Version 1.02] and earlier version will be also updated.

A similar update was released for the K-3 II, K-S2, K-S1, and K-1 months ago, and also the K-3 today.  The K-70 (and newer) will natively support KAF4 lenses.  Older bodies are not compatible with KAF4 lenses.
