Pentax K-50 Firmware v1.10 Released

Adds KAF4 mount support and enables use of the 55-300mm PLM lens

By PF Staff in Firmware Updates on Nov 24, 2016

After a long period of uncertainty, Ricoh Imaging has released a firmware update for the Pentax K-50 to add support for the new KAF4 lens mount. KAF4 lenses lack a mechanical aperture stop-down lever; they instead require electronic actuation of the aperture.  Before this firmware update, the K-50 was not able to issue the necessary commands to operate this system.

Thanks to this update, the new silent-focusing DA 55-300mm PLM lens can be used with the K-50.  We strongly recommend this lens over its screwdrive AF predecessor, as it focuses more quickly and allows for more precise manual adjustments without making any compromises.

Download the K-50 firmware from the official Pentax firmware site.

Pentax K-1 Firmware v1.40 Released

New features for astrophotography and more

By PF Staff in Firmware Updates on Nov 17, 2016

Ricoh Imaging has just released its fourth firmware update for the Pentax K-1, which is also the second consecutive feature-enhancing update for this camera model.  It seems like Pentax has taken to heart the concept of long-term support of the K-1 through firmware.

This update focuses on features that further enhance astrophotography.

This updates adds the following two features which recently debuted on the new Pentax K-70:

  • LCD Night Vision Mode
The backlight is dimmed and the LCD adopts a red color palette to allow you to operate the camera in darkness without being blinded.

  • Extended Bulb Timer
In Bulb mode, it is now possible to select shutter speeds up to 20 minutes.  There's no longer a need for a remote or a cable release just for this purpose.

In addition, there's something brand new:

  • White Dot Noise Reduction
Some users have experienced stray white dots in long exposures of the night sky.  New in-camera processing seeks to remove these artifacts, which are classified as digital noise.

Pentax has also published a supplement to the user manual describing the new functions.

Original Release Notes

[Enhanced features]

  • Red-lighted LCD monitor display function
The PENTAX K-1 provides a red-lighted LCD monitor display function, which prevents the pupils of the photographer’s eyes from closing down after they have become accustomed to a dark environment during astrophotography.
  • Bulb timer function
The bulb timer function comes in handy when photographing celestial bodies or fireworks. The PENTAX K-1 allows the photographer to expend an exposure time up to 20 minutes in Bulb mode.

[Others]

  • During slow shutter speeds the PENTAX K-1 features white dot noise reduction processing. (*1)
  • Overall Improved stability for general performance.

Pentax K-1 Firmware v1.30 Released

Four new features for the Pentax full frame

By PF Staff in Firmware Updates on Sep 29, 2016

Ricoh Imaging has just released its third firmware update for the Pentax K-1, which is also the first feature-enhancing update that we've seen in a long while.  It makes some very useful additions:

  • Electronic Front Curtain Shutter in Live View
EFCS can now be selected.  This will help alleviate shake that otherwise induces a slight degree of blur at shutter speeds in the 1/90-1/180s range.

  • 1:1 Crop Mode
Originally found on the K-1 prototype, the square crop mode has made a return.

  • Function Dial BKT Quality-of-life Improvement
You can now go back to single-shot mode while BKT is selected on the Function Dial.  This is a big time-saver, as previously, you had to enter the menu or turn the Function Dial to another setting to exit bracketing.

  • 2-frame AA Simulator Bracketing
You can now choose to bracket for only the Type 2 AA filter simulator setting.

Download the K-1 firmware from the official Pentax firmware site.  Pentax has also published a supplement to the user manual describing the new functions.

We discussed this update in more detail during our Photokina 2016 coverage.
