Pentax K-3 III v1.70, K-1 II and K-1 v2.10, KF v1.10 Firmware Update Released

Earlier this month, Ricoh Imaging released firmware updates for the Pentax K-3 Mark III, the Pentax K-1, the Pentax K-1 Mark II, and the Pentax KF. These updates introduce the third of four special-edition Custom Image profiles that will work only with specific lenses. The update for the K-3 Mark III, K-1, and K-1 II adds an electronic focus limiter function with the new HD D FA 100mm macro, which promises to improve focus speed for both telephoto and macro applications. Last but not least, the K-3 Mark III also receives new autofocus features (see this thread for more details) and a new 1.7x crop mode, which, collectively, makes this one of the most feature-rich firmware updates to date.

The custom image profile in this update is called FUYUNO, meaning winter, and is available only when using the HD DA 35mm Limited and HD FA 31mm Limited lenses. This profile is meant to emphasize cooler winter tones, and particularly tailored to match the rendering of the lenses it works with.

TOKYO, December 1, 2022 －RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. is pleased to announce the release of new function-expansion firmware for PENTAX K-1, K-1 Mark II, K-3 Mark III and KF digital SLR cameras. This firmware lets users take advantage of special-edition Custom Images in combination with specific PENTAX Limited-series lenses. The FUYUNO (winter field) mode has been released as the third season-specific Custom Images option.

● Special-edition Custom Images
To make photographic experiences with PENTAX digital SLR cameras even more enjoyable and exciting, PENTAX is providing a new approach to SLR photography, through special-edition Custom Images designed to create subject- or scene-specific finishing touches in combination with certain PENTAX Limited-series lenses -- lenses popular for their distinctive image rendition. PENTAX will release a series of season-specific Custom Images to create distinctive finishing touches dedicated to the spring, summer, autumn and winter seasons. As a lens is mounted, the camera automatically detects compatibility with the firmware. Once compatibility is confirmed, the user can then select special-edition Custom Images.

● FUYUNO (winter field)
This special-edition, season-specific Custom Image mode is designed to emphasize colors depicting the chilly air of winter, and to deliver sharp, high-key images. This mode can be selected in combination with HD PENTAX-FA 31mm F1.8 Limited and HD PENTAX-DA 35mm F2.8 Macro Limited lenses, both highly regarded for their high-resolution image reproduction.

● Upcoming schedule
Following on the release of three season-specific Custom Image modes -- KATEN for summer, KYUSHU for autumn, and FUYUNO for winter -- PENTAX will release a fourth mode specially designed for the colors of spring. Check the chart below for detailed information.

Added [AF Point for H/V Comp] for AF with viewfinder shooting and AF with live-view shooting. The reference position and movement position of the focus point can be maintained for each of the vertical and horizontal compositions.
[Select (XS)] has been added to the AF area for AF with viewfinder shooting and pinpoint focus point can be selected more precisely than with SELECT(S).
Added [1.7x] to crop.

Pentax firmware update instructions:

Download the firmware ZIP file from the appropriate link above
Extract the file to a folder of your choosing
Locate the extracted .BIN file and copy it to the root (top level i.e. outside of any folder) of a formatted SD card
Insert the card into your camera (slot 1) and ensure the battery is fully charged
Turn the camera power on while pressing the MENU button
Select "Start" at the firmware prompt
Once the screen displays "Complete", turn off the camera
Power the camera back on and resume normal use
In order to verify that the firmware update was successful, go to the firmware option under the setup (wrench icon) menu tab, and confirm that the indicated firmware version matches that of the update.

Note that all updates are cumulative, so the latest firmware version includes the contents of all previous versions. You only need to install the latest version. Need help? See our firmware update guide.
