Pentax DA 12-35mm DC WR lens coming

Pentax successfully filed a patent for a new zoom lens

By PF Staff in Pentax Announcements on Dec 17, 2010

News has leaked that Pentax has successfully filed a patent for a new 12-35mm F3.5-4.5 wide-angle zoom lens, featuring both weather sealing (WR) and the SDM autofocus.

Pentax has yet to officially announce this lens.  However, technical specifications are already known (according to the patent):
  • Minimum aperture range: F3.6-4.5 (labeled as F3.5-4.5)
  • Diagonal angle of view: 101.2-44.0 degrees
  • APS-C (digital) only
  • 16 elements in 5 groups
  • 3 AL (ashperical) elements
  • KAF3 mount
  • Official name: SMC Pentax-DA 12-35mm F3.5-4.5 AL SDM WR
Knowing Pentax, this lens will likely not become available until late next year.  It's great to see a weather-sealed wide-angle lens that's going to be cheaper than a DA*, though!  Pentax also claims that their new zoom will do a good job of handling aberrations.

Pentax 645 25mm F4 Coming

New Pentax 645 wide-angle hinted at by Ned Bunnel

By PF Staff in Pentax Announcements on Nov 24, 2010

In his recent interview with the Online Photographer, Ned Bunnell hinted at the forthcoming release of a D-FA 25mm F4 lens for the 645D.  While complete specs for the lens haven't been leaked, we expect this lens to feature SDM as well as weather sealing, just like the current 55mm F2.8 lens.  The 25mm will only support the cropped sensor on the 645D, and as such, it won't be usable on the fiml 645 bodies.

Its field of view will correspond that of a 33mm lens on the 645 film system, or a 14mm lens on the Pentax APS-C DSLRs (about 92 degrees diagonally).

More specs on this lens will be posted as we receive more information.  Stay tuned!

By PF Staff in Pentax Announcements on Nov 9, 2010

When we last reported the exciting news that the Pentax K-5 had fared so well in DxOmark's sensor tests, one of the most anticipated competing bodies, the Nikon D7000, had not yet been tested.  That test is now in, however, and we're proud to see that the K-5 has once again held its ground against the competition!

With these stunning results, the K-5 is currently one of, if not the best APS-C DSLR out there in terms of image quality!

In a couple of weeks, we will be posting a full-length, in-depth Pentax K-5 review.  Until then, we've prepared the following resources:

We also plan to bring you updates on what's new in the K-r following our treatment of the K-5!

We hope you'll celebrate this exciting news together with us! Check out the forum for further buzz surrounding the K-5's remarkable performance.
