K-1 Hardware Upgrade: Pentax Loves You, Too

Ricoh has announced an offer that will essentially upgrade your current Pentax K-1 to a Pentax K-1 II. Pentax K-1 owners will be able to have their main circuit board replaced, upgrading the camera with the new features of the K-1 II, which we understand will include the accelerator unit that enables ISO 819200 and lower noise as well as the new Dynamic Pixel Shift Resolution mode that allows hand-held capture of pixel-shifted images. The upgrade service will also swap out the SR logo with one that reflects the K-1 II's new capabilities.

In a market where "upgrade" has become a euphemism for "replace," this appears to be an unprecedented act of brand loyalty: one from the manufacturer to the customer rather than the other way around. This is not a trade-in incentive. This is not an out-of-warranty repair. This is an offer to take your last-generation camera and upgrade it with a few new components to make it just as good as the latest model available.

The K-1 upgrade service will cost $550 (USD) and will be available through authorized repair channels in many major markets (the price of a new K-1 II is $1999).

In the US, the service can be obtained from Ricoh's US repair service provider, Precision Camera, from May 21 through September 30, 2018. Canadians will be have the same service available through Sun Camera for $690 (CAD).  UK pricing is set at £450 through Johnson's Photopia.  For information on repairs elsewhere in Europe, visit the country-specific sites of Ricoh Imaging Europe.  In Australia, service will be provided through CR Kennedy, with details yet to be announced.  Ricoh promises to provide more details in the coming weeks, and we will keep you informed as we learn more.

Complete information on the Pentax K-1 II can be found in the official K-1 II announcement.
