Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 vs F4.0-5.6 Comparative Review

A new 5-way wide-angle zoom review!

By PF Staff in Review Announcements on May 29, 2012

We've just posted a new comparative review of two ultra-wide zooms for Pentax: the Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM, and the Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC J.  In the review we take an in-depth look at the optical performance, the autofocus, the handling, and the value of each lens.

More importantly, however, this review is actually an extension of the three-way ultra-wide comparative review we posted last month, in which we compared the Sigma 12-24mm, Pentax 12-24mm, and Tamron 10-24mm lenses.  Thus, this new review is a 5-way comparison of ultra-wide zoom lens options for Pentax (and other camera brands as well). We hope you enjoy the read and find it useful!

Pentax 50-200mm Weather Sealed Zoom Review

Read the Review!

By PF Staff in Review Announcements on May 14, 2012

The SMC Pentax-DA 50-200mm Weather Resistant zoom is the latest 50-200mm lens from Pentax, and it's meant to be part of an introductory kit for your weather-sealed DSLR, such as the Pentax K-5.

The price of this lens went up by $50 following the introduction of Pentax USA's unilateral pricing policy last month, which fortunately isn't much compared to other lenses.  At the new price of $249, is this 50-200mm lens still worth it for outdoors shooters and landscape use, or as a supplement to the kit lens?  Some might say "yes" right away, because at the moment, Pentax offers no weather-sealed version of their popular 55-300mm lens.

In any case, read our 50-200mm review to find out!

Pentax 35mm F2.8- Macro and Normal Lens All-in-one

Dual-purpose lens with excellent image quality

By PF Staff in Review Announcements on May 8, 2012

The smc Pentax-DA 35mm F2.8 Macro Limited is a versatile lens. The focal length of 35mm is close to what is considered a 'normal' lens (like a 50mm lens on a 24x36mm film camera). In addition to this useful focal length this lens also provides macro capability down to 1:1.

The DA 35mm Limited at the time of writing has 75 user reviews in our user review section, making it one of the most popular Pentax lenses despite its price tag. Its average used price range is $400-$450 and after the recent price hike the price as new is a hefty $699 in the USA.  Despite the high price we find that the lens is worth a second look if you're after a 'normal' walk around lens with full macro capability and with exceptional build and image quality. If you're primarily after the Macro capability our advice is to go for a lens with a lens with a longer focal length, around 100mm or even more, which allows you to put some distance between lens and object being photographed.

We've recently revised our in-depth review of this lens, and we hope you'll find it helpful!

D FA 100mm WR F2.8 Macro Review Posted

Is it worth the new, higher price?

By PF Staff in Review Announcements on May 6, 2012

The SMC Pentax-D FA 100mm F2.8 WR Macro has become expensive in the USA after the price hike in the spring of 2012, but if you do a lot of macro photography in the outdoors you should in our opinion still take this lens into consideration. If you do not need the weather-sealing or if you want to use a wider range of close-up accessories you could instead try to hunt down one of the earlier Pentax macros, or take a look at the Tamron 90mm Macro, which is available for about half of that of the Pentax.  Regardless of its price, we've found the 100mm macro to be one of the sharpest Pentax lenses out there!

For more about this lens read our in-depth review of the 100mm macro , or our comparative review of the Tamron 90mm vs Pentax 100mm.
