Mirror, Mirror: The 645 Digital System at a Crossroads

The Fujifilm GFX 50S casts the aging 645Z in a new light

By deadwolfbones in Photo Industry News on Jan 20, 2017

In many ways, 2016 was a landmark year for Pentax and Ricoh. The company released its first full-frame digital SLR, a fantastic mid-range APS-C body, and a worthy addition to its increasingly popular Theta 360-degree camera lineup.

The first two achievements in particular helped bring Pentax up to par with its competition. The lack of a full-frame DSLR had for years been seen as a sign of Pentax's un-serious attitude to growing market share and attracting professional users, so releasing the formidable K-1 was a huge step forward. And the K-70, while still underwhelming in some ways, introduced a number of new, long-awaited technologies to the Pentax faithful: most notably, on-sensor PDAF for continuous video autofocus.

Mid-range body boasting the best APS-C image quality to date

By deadwolfbones in Review Announcements on Oct 14, 2016

Pentax's latest DSLR has positively surprised us over the course of the past several weeks of testing.  This new yet affordable 24-megapixel DSLR not only incorporates advanced features from the APS-C flagship Pentax K-3 II and full-frame K-1, but it also delivers what we've found to be the best image quality from any Pentax crop body.  Specifically, this camera exhibits less noise at high ISOs than its older cousins, and it's the first mid-range body to offer 14-bit color depth.

Photokina is the granddaddy of camera industry trade shows, and unlike CES, CP+, and PhotoPlus, it only comes around every other year. That means manufacturers roll out the red carpet, showcasing major updates and exciting new products on a global stage.

For years, the SMC and HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 have been faithful companions for Pentaxians who want big telephoto reach but don’t want to spend a bundle. The original’s most glaring flaw was a lack of weather sealing, which was fixed with a WR version that debuted alongside the Pentax K-3. The other big issue? Slow autofocus due to an antiquated screw-drive motor. Well, a few months ago, Ricoh Imaging unveiled the fix for that problem, too: the all-new HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE with silent AF.

A 4K capable action camera

By deadwolfbones in Review Announcements on Sep 12, 2016

The Ricoh WG-M2 is an intriguing addition to the rugged WG line of outdoor cameras.  As this year's follow-up to Ricoh's first entry into the action cam market, the WG-M2 is a substantial upgrade: it boasts the ability to record 4K video at 30 FPS— something not offered by even the most expensive Pentax DSLR models in the current lineup.

This camera also delivers an extraordinarily wide angle of view as well as waterproofing and a number of optional mounts.  But is this a worthy competitor to market leaders such as GoPro?  Is it a good value?  Read on to find out!
