Pentax K-1 Will Feature a 36.4-megapixel Sensor

Key specifications leaked

By PF Rumors in Pentax Rumors on Feb 12, 2016

Japanese news site digicame-info posted today the following rumored specifications for the upcoming Pentax full frame DSLR:

  • Resolution: 36.4 megapixels
  • Sensor size: 35.9 x 24.0 mm
  • Continuous shooting: 6.5 frames / sec.
  • ISO range: 100-204,800
  • GPS built-in
  • Media: SD, SDHC, SDXC
  • Size: 136.5 x 110 x 85.5 mm
  • Weight: 925 g

The site claims that the camera will be released "very soon" and that rumors indicate that the official product name will indeed be "Pentax K-1".

Furthermore, the effective pixel count, framerate, and ISO range suggests that the sensor in the K-1 differs from the 36-megapixel sensors found in existing full-frame bodies such as the Nikon D800 series.  This would be consistent with Pentax's historical commitment to delivering highly-competitive still image quality.  We expect to be impressed by the K-1 once we can put it through its paces!

The Pentax Full Frame is Just Around the Corner

February launch highly likely

By PF Rumors in Pentax Rumors on Feb 1, 2016

The long-awaited Pentax Full Frame DSLR is finally just around the corner.  After all, it's not April, so we must put all jokes aside.  For the Pentax enthusiast community, it has been a long wait full of emotions ranging from excitement to frustration to denial.  Yet those who endured it will soon be rewarded with what will arguably be one of the biggest Pentax product launches of the digital era.

We expect the official full frame announcement to land shortly before the 2016 CP+ camera trade show, which starts in Tokyo on February 25th.  If this turns out to be the case, count on us to bring you an exclusive hands-on look at the body, its image quality, and its features!  In addition, we will be covering all the news from the Pentax booth at the show as we've done in previous years.

On January 28th, the official Pentax full frame teaser site was updated with a description of the D FA 24-70mm standard zoom lens.  This was accompanied by a new photo of the camera itself, this time depicting the top LCD and settings dial in detail (shown above).

Among others, forum member Zygonyx attended the show and captured a clear view of the camera from the top:

Ricoh GR II on the Horizon

A new "pro compact" is coming

By PF Rumors in Pentax Rumors on Jun 6, 2015

Ricoh has been refreshing its flagship compact— the Ricoh GR— every other year for nearly the past decade. As GR stock starts running thin at retailers and now that 25 months have passed since the announcement of the current GR, buzz surrounding the inevitable launch of a successor is growing.

According to Pentax Forums discussions and information posted on Japanese news site Digicame-Info, the upcoming Ricoh GR II will feature Wi-Fi and a touchscreen.  The new model will use the same sensor and lens as the current GR.  A leaked photo of the GR II shows a slight variation in the GR II's hotshoe area:

Ricoh GR IIRicoh GR vs GR II: Comparison

The Ricoh GR has received widespread praise as a professional-grade compact camera.  It packs an APS-C sensor, extensive customizability, and a sharp 18mm F2.8 lens in a lightweight, pocketable body.  All this results in image quality comparable to that of a high-end DSLR.  Learn more about it in our Ricoh GR in-depth review.

Currently, the GR is Ricoh Imaging's exclusive offering in the high-end compact digital camera market.  No large-sensor Pentax-branded compacts are currently available.

We expect the GR II to be launched within the coming weeks.

Pentax K-3 II Coming In Late April

New APS-C flagship DSLR

By PF Rumors in Pentax Rumors on Apr 16, 2015

It looks like Pentax users will see one more APS-C DSLR body before the debut of the Pentax full frame later this year.  According to digicame-info and other sources, the Pentax K-3 II will soon be announced as the successor to the flagship K-3.

Little is currently known about the K-3 II, though we expect improvements in it to focus primarily on delivering image quality enhancements similar to what was offered in the upgrade from the K-5 to the K-5 IIs.  It is possible that the camera will incorporate some of the new Pentax technologies that we saw at CP+ 2015, such as the pixel-shifting method of attaining a higher resolution.

Expect to see all the details about the Pentax K-3 II right here on our homepage once it is officially announced.  Stay tuned!
