Latest Review Posted | Ricoh XR-P Multi-program I've had two of these cameras. Both died with fewer than 15 rolls run through them.
I was enamored with the specs (1/2000 shutter, full readout viewfinder, exposure compensation, self timer, etc) but the camera is built fairly poorly. It feels cheap in the hand. Plastics are everywhere and do little to inspire confidence. This camera was a cheaper alternative to better made pentaxs in its day. It shows. Note to that the program modes will only function when coupled with Ricoh p series lenses. (Not Pentax A series or above).
The viewfinder readout in low light and indoors is more or less unusable. It's relatively dim and as other users mention, shutter and aperture information becomes quite troublesome to read. But in bright daylight, it is a very pleasant experience.
While the camera doesn't operate without batteries, I have never been caught in a predicament because of that fact. However, I can attest to the frustration of the battery saving feature wherein one needs to have the shutter at half cock in order to run the meter/fire the shutter! With practise, I'm sure, this would become less of an annoyance.
My first one died while on a multi day hike in the Canadian Rockies, while my second one died while on vacation in South Korea. Both are unrepairable, as no one seems to keep parts for old ricohs.
In sum, not a bad camera, but it's great specs are brought down to earth by its many other shortcomings. 5/10 means it's just average in my book.
