Pentax Optio W80
supersize

Description:
The Pentax Optio W80 is waterproof, dustproof, coldproof, and also shockproof enough to withstand impact from a fall of more than three feet (one meter).

The Optio W80's waterproof design withstands depths of up to 16 feet (5 meters) to protect from rain and spills, as well as allowing full underwater photos and video for up to two hours. On dry land, the rugged, shockproof design protects against drops of up to 3.3 feet to protect the camera from hard use.

The camera has a 12.1 megapixel sensor and a 5X internal optical zoom (equivalent to 28-140mm). A Super Protect (SP) coating is applied to the mineral crystal cover of the internal zoom lens and helps repel water, grime and finger marks.

Other importantfeatures in the Optio W80:

- Coldproof design that allows the camera to be used in sub-freezing temperatures of 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 degrees Celsius), ideal for cold weather activities such as skiing and snowmobiling.
- 2.5 inch LCD monitor that features anti-reflective coating, making it easy to view, even in bright sunlight.
- Widescreen, HD movie capture that records resolutions up to 1280x720 pixels at full-speed 30 frames per second.
- Fast Face Detection technology that sees up to 32 faces in 0.03 seconds, with Smile Capture and Blink Detection, for perfect portrait shots.
- Pixel Track Shake Reduction (SR) that ensures sharp images in any lighting condition, without adding high ISO noise. Digital SR and Movie SR are also available.
- Close focusing, Super Macro mode that brings out the details in even the smallest subjects as close as 1 cm (less than one inch).

The Optio W80 was introduced in July 2009 at a price of $299.95 USD.

Pros: It is waterproof, it is tough, the lens resists dirt and scratches
Cons: Image quality is poor, it is not cold proof, battery life is poor, rear screen is dim, shutter lag

Bought this after my W10, a 6MP predecessor, was stolen. I had been very happy with the W10, so this seemed like a good idea. It wasn't.

The main problem is quite simply, the image quality is among the worst I have seen of any digital camera, ever. I've been using digicams since 640x480 resolution ( not the screen, the image ... ) was considered a breakthrough. This model appeared much later, at a time when the megapixel race was at full speed and unfortunately, it shows. The image quality, even at "web picture" size, is noticeably poor. Worse than the 6MP predecessor. Worse than any 3MP camera ( including camera phones ) I have used. This is not "pixel peeping" or looking for issues on zoomed-in areas of the image. It's just plain bad all over, with noise making it look like a low-quality newspaper ( not magazine ) picture. The only exception is in bright light, where the sensor has half a chance to provide a low-noise picture.

I've used it all over the place for holidays with the kids, because it is waterproof and seems completely shock resistant. It is not, however, cold resistant. On hiking trips, even kept in a pocket next to the chest, it always shuts down as we ascend into the cold, and starts working again as we descend into the relative warmth. The same situation, a cheap DSLR ( Nikon D40 if interested ), not pocketed, was absolutely fine.

Avoid this one.

Later versions may be better, but I wish I still had the W10. 6MP for a small sensor was/is fine !

Paul
