Pentax Super S2
supersize

Description:
The Super S2 was an upgraded version of the S2: The fastest shutter speed was upgraded from 1/500 s to 1/1000 s. The Super S2 was sold with a Super Takumar 55 mm F2 Standard Lens.

The Super S2 was later updated with a self zeroing exposure counter as used on the SV.
This second series was sold with either the Super Takumar 55 mm F2 or the 55 mm F1.8 Standard Lens.

The second series exists in two versions. The first has a green letter R on the rewind knob and the later had an Orange letter R. Only bodies with the orange letter R can be used with the 50 mm F1.4 lens which protudes further into the body than F1.8 and F2 standard lenses.

There is no "Super" designation on the body. The 1/1000 s top shutter speed is the most obvious give away that this the is "Super" model.

The 'Super S2' model came in an early and a late model. The late model has film counter that reverts to zero automatically. The late model came in two versions: First with a green letter 'R' on the rewind knob, then with an orange letter 'R'. The orange 'R' means that the Super Takumar 50 mm F1.4 lens safely can be used with the camera.

Pros: Top shutter speed, self re-setting frame counter, Fresnel viewing screen
Cons: Obscure, no self-timer

I picked up a non-functioning S2 off eBay and sent it in for an overhaul. Testing it before sending it, the camera had obviously been assembled incorrectly, probably by someone who didn't know how to reassemble it. The purchase price of $50 included shipping from Japan.

There are very few of these in the U.S. relative to other Pentax bodies, so I'm happy to get to use one and to be the first person to review it here. I like the S2 Super a lot. It's basically an H3V (SV) without the self timer. It's fun to use, has a light shutter sound, and is well designed and ergonomic as the rest of the S/H line. (And it's got that special, indescribable something that comes from being difficult to obtain.)

One thing I do find odd about my copy compared to the stock image is that mine has a self re-setting frame counter whereas the stock image does not. So it seems possible that there are even two versions of the S2 (hypothesizing here) -- one with and one without the automatic reset. Everything else on mine is the same, but my SN is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than the stock image's, so it does seem plausible that the frame counter could have changed during the production life.
