Pros: | Rugged build/all mechanical. Split prism focus screen.1/125 Flash sync. | Cons: | No mirror lift, but that's not a deal breaker for me. | | See also my review of the plain XR-1 without the autowind facility.
Bought for approx.$34.00, here in England, it came with a Ricoh 55mm f2.2 lens, and with it's light meter working. Good, well built, all mechanical camera, with a desirable Copal metal shutter allowing a 1/125sec sync. speed. I bought it when I was casting around for a Pentax KX and it was a no-brainer buy at $34.00 compared to the prices being asked for KXs in comparable good condition. Doesn't have the mirror lift capability of the KX but that's something I'd rarely use so I'm not bothered.
The XR-1S differs from the plain XR-1 by way of having provision for an autowind/motordrive. However, when I've occasionally looked to buy one for mine, I've not been able to find one.
The standard 55mm f2.2 is not highly rated by most reviewers and in truth I've never used the one that came with my XR-1S, instead I generally have it fitted with a Topcon AM 55mm f1.7, which has proved excellent in all respects
