Best Lens For Color & Contrast

Looking for a lens that specializes in color and contrast. Thinking of the DA*16-50 and the Tamron 17-50.

I have the Sigma 17-70 with a C-PL, an FA50 1.4 with a DA40 on the way in the above focal range. Any recommendations?

If MF lenses are OK, the A35-105 f3.5 has outstanding color/contrast capabilities, the blues and reds are out of this world. Beats my old $1,200.00 Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L glass to a pulp in color rendering.

Pretty much all the DA* and DA Limiteds have wonderful, saturated colors and contrast - a very 'modern' rendering. Especially the DA 15 and DA 35. I think your DA 40 will show you some great colors.

I think my DA* 16-50 had warmer colors than my Tamron 17-50 does, but I have the Tamron in Nikon mount, so it's hard to compare directly.

A number of prime lenses will have excellent colour and contrast. In the 50 mm range, the Carl Zeiss 50mm and Voigtlander 58mm are superb for example.

I would add the D FA lenses too.

I can with a great deal of comfort, recommend the DA*16-50 if you want to go there for a wide to normal zoom.

16mm

39mm

Indoors with AF540

Back outside at 50mm

A couple more..

..... and yes, I've had this lens since December 2007 and the SDM continues to move right along, smooth as silk and quiet as can be.

My color and contrast preferences are firstly the Zeiss lenses like the 50/1.4 or 85/1.4, then the voigtlander Nokton 50/1.4 (all MF lenses) followed closely by the Pentax DA limiteds and then the FA limiteds.

If you want a modern zoom, then the DA* is a good candidate. IMO, it's got the Pentax color.

But, at the end look through the images at Flickr, Pbase, pixelpeeper and read user reviews here and possibly some professional reviews (limited value) and make up your own mind.

Looks like,,, I'm only a few miles north of Monroe County, so I'm in "the radius". (Yea, I've got my Health Department-issued potassium iodide tablets- like that'll help! ) Here's another view, also taken with the DA*16-50. The whole complex is fenced in securely but various farmer's fields do still provide photographic access. The steam clouds are omnipresent.

Re; Best Lens For Color & Contrast

Actually of all the lenses I've used or owned, I'm very partial to the DA*50-135, for color and contrast, although it sounds like you're looking for something wider. (In which case, although the DA*16-50 is a good choice, the DA 12-24 is also highly recommended!)

Since you mentioned the DA*16-50 specifically, here is another shot, straight out of the camera with NO post-processing whatsoever, taken with my old K10D. A very useful lens which has given me more than its share of keepers:

From lenses I have used a lot the DA*16~50 and the DA 70/2.4 have great colour and contrast.
