Err, what happened to Pentax having an affordable 50mm prime lens?

I've been searching all night for any prime lens in the 50mm area from Pentax, and even the used prices are through the roof! I was hoping to get another nifty fifty style lens, but every FA 50mm f/1.7 or F 50mm f/1.7 which used to be close to $100 is now closer to $300 everywhere I look. The DA 40mm has doubled in price, and so has every other lens that I've looked at. Doesn't Pentax have a single nifty fifty style lens that doesn't cost more than $150?

You can pick up the A50 1.7 for well under $150 but its manual focus, but has auto aperture.

Go look for Takumars (M42 glass). I have recently bought a SuperTak 55mm/1.8 for far below 100US$ (exchange rates make it a bit tricky to give an exact price but basically between US$50 and US$70).

Genuine adaptor is expensive, but in my case is a once off as I have a dedicated camera for my M42 lenses so the adaptor lives permanently on the camera.

found one F50/1.7 being sold for $130 last month. too bad I didn't bought it. I could had sold it to you for $200 which is still cheap. maybe I'll find another one again and sell it for those who are looking for a copy of this rare AF 50mm lens.

reasons why I didn't bought? I have an FA copy and ran out of mad money to purchase it. :ugh:

F50/1.7 is raree??? Well you don't see them as often as FA50/1.4 but far more often than F50/1.4 or FA50/1.7 IMO...
Anyway, it's understandable IMO. Did Pentax ever have afforable fast portrait prime (70-90mm) for film format???
No??, so why would you expect them to have it now? They are still pretty much saying they areee comitted to APSC and since 50s are short tele/portraits on APSC I understand the pricing of DA*55 (and certainn extentFA50/1.4) and since that's pretty much what dictates the prices of used glass there you have it....

what is really shame is the fact that they don't offer cheap stanard prime! say 35/1.7 or 1.8

I agree entirely. Heck, no need to even make it f/1.7 or f/1.8. Just bring the FA35/2 back as a DA35/2 at a decent price (cheaper than the DA35Ltd), and that's it. As a bonus, make if WR is it's possible to keep the price reasonable.

or ask Samyang to finally release the rumored 35/1.2 lens.

I don't a 50mm that autofocuses, or else I wouldn't have a problem since there are plenty of manual focus lenses out there. I'll keep looking for the F 50mm f/1.7 though.

Ha, but that would likely by manual-focus, and not affordable

not sure about what the pricepoint would be, but it's an f1.2 lens which would make AF rather useless wide open and I would believe that most people would probably shoot at wide open apertures most of the time. what makes it attractive is the focal length as well. if it would cost around $250 as an auto-aperture lens, that is cheaper than any of Pentax's legendary mf lenses and sounds much more compelling than the 1-stop slower FA31. as far as AF is concerned, shooting at slower apertures, you'd be better off with the FA31,FA35,DA35 or DA40.

They are both fairly uncommon lenses, and getting rarer. The price increase of the FA50 increased demand, but supply didn't go up too, so no big surprise the price would go up.

No it hasn't. For years the standard price was around $280; now it's around $340. That's nowhere near doubling; it's about a 20% rise.

Well, I don't know what lenses you looked at, but very few have done anything remotely like doubling. On average, they've gone up around 20%, just like the DA40. A couple - like the FA50 and FA35 - have gone up more than that. And quite a few - like the DA15, DA70 and most of the consumer zooms - have gone up less.

If you need AF, no. If you don't need AF, there are plenty of cheap options.

Looks like until I can find a cheap F 50mm f/1.7 I'll just pick up a cheap manual focus one. Probably the 50mm f/2 or something, it's usually very cheap. Trying to decide if I want to get a midrange zoom for that portrait style area though, any suggestions for that around $200? I'm thinking 28-70mm or something in that range, probably not the Tamron 28-75mm though, it's a bit too expensive for me to get right now.

If you'd like to try M42 lenses, also check for 55mm or 58mm lenses.

that's another good option. The old M42 lenses are usually pretty good and sell for next to nothing!
I have the K series version of 55/1.8 and it's a marvelous lens!
