DA 16-45mm vs. DA 17-70mm

Besides the SDM issue, which of these lenses has better IQ?

I've owned both the 16-45 and 17-70 and I'd have to say the IQ is pretty close between them. I would go so far as to say the IQ is close enough that if you were trying to choose between the two lenses, the other differences between them (FL range, size, cost, SDM) would more likely be the controlling factors. Also, for what it's worth, I found the build quality of the 17-70 to be a good step above the 16-45.

16-45mm. Wider and less distortion

Build quality is way better for the 17-70. However, the 16-45 has both less distortion at the wide end and converts to 24mm at the wide end. Depending on your type of shooting this may be very relevant.

Note, I have both lens but the 16-45mm is currently in retirement.

Also, both a way superior to the kit lens.

The SMCP DA 16-45mm f/4 ED AL is sharper @16mm it's contrasty as a prime through the focal length range, though compared to a prime; both lenses will be found lacking in resolution. And the 16-45mm has the annoying trait of getting longer at the wider focal lengths which can obstruct the built in flash, As far as I know the SMCP DA 17-70mm f/4 doesn't do this. Though it tends to suffer from more chromatic aberrations than the 16-45mm. The distortions each lens has makes choosing between the two on that factor alone a complete bust, they are both remarkably average in that regard. the image quality in the corners from the 16-45mm is petty abysmal my FA31LTD wipes the floor with it @ f/1.8 in the corners, even when I have the 16-45mm stopped down to f/8.
