SMC Takumar VS Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50/1.4

Hey guys,

I just got 2 M42 50mm lenses,

50mm F1.4 Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR, Asahi Opt. Co., Japan

50mm F1.4 SMC TAKUMAR, Asahi Opt. Co., Japan

They both have 8 aperture blades.

i will post actual photos later.

But in the meantime, anyone can tell which one should be "better"? I already have an SMC Pentax-A 50/1.7 and wondering if I should bother with the two lenses mentioned. I have not used them yet since i'm still waiting for my m42 to k adapter to arrive.

Thanks!

They are about the best 50mm lenses you can get.

Take a look here for some explanation and some more opinions.

Optically they are the same lens. For me there'd be three main variables betewen them:
- which physical pacage I like better - all metal or a rubber focus ring
- the older lens may have more yellowing
- sample to sample variation + life's knocks may make one sample slightly better than another

I seem to prefer the all metal S-M-C to the rubber of SMC, but I wouldn't kick a SMC out of my camera bag.

I'd say keep the A 50mm 1.7 too. I think it's sharper than the Taks 50mm 1.4 and has the useful A setting, but the Taks are sharp even wide open (sharper than the M 50mm 1.4, for instance)... So, my advice is: keep the A lens and a Tak 1.4.
