Got my service quote for the DA* 16-50mm

So this 16-50mm lens is just over 2 years old, I may have taken around 10,000 pictures through it tops. I'm real careful with my stuff, and have used it with both my K10D and K20D.

The lens has slowly been getting less and less accurate focus and will sometimes fail to lock focus regardless of how bright or dark the scene is. I would have to spin the focus ring back and forth or focus it to infinity against the sky/ceiling before it would respond and focus again.

Anyways, sent it in to Pentax and my total repair bill is $305.98 Canadian dollars.

Parts replaced:

0048120 0-G201 GEAR PLATE A ASSY

also the motor may have been replaced too.

I'm hoping they can give a little good will and reduce the cost a little bit!

Nope. Repairs are designed to be expensive. That $300 represents about 1/2 hour in labor and $50 in parts. If you could talk them down to $200 for some reason (known SDM problems), consider it miraculous.

I'm beginning to think that the "*" in the DA* generation of lenses stands for "Disposable." A clever business strategy: either replace or repair every few years. Brilliant!

I've just sent in my 16-50 for the 2nd time in 6 months. Thankfully still under warranty.
Motor was replaced 1st time around, now I wonder what will be next.

Out of curiousity, do you use third-party batteries?

I've used only Pentax batteries. Would've been nice to have a reason the thing is messing up.
