pentax 17-70mm SDM focus problem

hello, i've got a new DA17-70mm,f4. but found that a problem with very slow speed when focus at range 50-70mm.
sometimes, i need to shift the focus one twice or more, or zoom-out to range 17-50mm to get a fast focus first, then zoom-in back to 50-70mm to take photo.
just wish to know if anybody get the same problem as me?
i'm using k20D with it, can i fix this myself?

Sounds familiar.

I don't think it's anything you can fix yourself. If you can return the lens and get a new one, that's your best option at this point.

I am having the same problem with this lens. I've tried it on a K100D Super & K-7; both cameras have great difficulty in achieving focus lock. It's driving me nuts--not sure if it's the camera(s) or the lens. I've attempted to fine tune the AF with the K-7, but nothing seems to work. I wonder if it's a fixable problem?

Try to add some friction to the focus ring by letting a finger slide against it. See if it locks quicker, if it does, be sure to describe the problem properly when sending it off to service.

That seemed to ease the problem almost completely...what gives?
