300mm f2.8 sigma lens

I just bought a 300mm f2.8 sigma lens and i am not happy with it.
I want some of your opions.
First it is usless at f2.8 very bad, at 3.2 and 3.5 better and at f4 I can get a 100 percent crop and usable prints.
Is this normal with the sigma lens or not. Also it is front focusing very bad. I have to set the microadjustment at plus 10 to get a usable pic.
Now sigma wants me to pay for the shipping to there Japan factory to look at the lens.
The lens is 3 months old and is not returnable. But with a one year warrenty.
What would you guys do?
Thanks

The first thing you should "always" do when you get a lens is test it.
Then... if you're not satisfied with it, you can return it within the given time period. Otherwise, you end-up where you are now(not fun).

Having said all that, I'd hit the reviews to see if you can't determine if you have a dud.
In which case, I'd send it in for adjustments...

Otherwise... you'll end-up like me with bins full of lenses that no one would ever buy let alone use.

Try to return the lens to your dealer and let him fight with Sigma for warranty service.

aside from the above, how about some examples.

Also note that F2.8 is very fast.

I work with a 300mm F4 and DOF is so shallow even at F4 when focusing close, Focusing errors are an issue.

Additionally, due to the shallow DOF you may find that unless you are exactly at right angles to the subject, there will only be a very small portion in focus.

Let's imagine a bird taken at an angle of 45 degrees, and the bird is 6 inches long. Wide open on a close shot where you fill the frame with the bird, the DOF may be only about 1/4 to 1/2 inch, therefore virtually all of the bird will be out of focus.

It may be a defective lens or it may be that you just have not learned how difficult it is to use.

Warranty

In cases where lenses are sent in for warranty repair, it is considered normal for the owner to pay for shipping to the repair center. But by the same token, return shipping is usually paid for by the manufacturer.

Pardon my asking but I thought Sigma had better than a one-year warranty? That was part of people's dismay with the whole SDM issue and the "minimal" one-year warranty from Pentax.

I definitely agree with Lowell regarding depth of field and focus issues. I've been shooting a fair amount with the DA*300/4 lately, and even at long distances (taking pictures of athletes at 100-200 feet +), the zone of focus at f4 can be quite limited. I can only imagine the problems presented by Lowell's bird scenario. Not to mention that solid support is important, especially with such a physically large and heavy lens. Are you using a tripod or at least a monopod?

I've bought my Sigma second hand. It has no BF or FF. It is fast. Sharp at f2.8 but if used in short distances.

This portrait is from 3 meters and sharp as razor.

I used it with Sigma TC2 and pentax AF1.7. Both with good results.

Hi Gary,

I have an older EX 300 f2.8 APO (pre DG). The lens is very sharp wide open, IMO.

A couple of examples:

K20, f2.8 at about 12 feet

K20 Sigma at f2.8 + P F 1.7x AFA at about 10 feet:

It sounds like you really have no choice but to send it in for warranty, but I would read the warranty statement carefully. If you bought this from an authorized dealer, I would suggest you contact them, then send it to them and have the dealer work with Sigma. Any dealer worth doing business with should be more than willing to handle this for you. An authorized dealer (especially if it's a big one) would have a lot more pull with Sigma than an individual owner. This is why you pay more than wholesale -- use it.

If you bought gray market, then you might be stuck for the shipping to Japan. . . but I'd contact Sigma Japan and see if their international warranty might cover the repairs to be done in the local facility. If not, you'll need to know what needs to be done to ship it to Japan anyway. . .

Those are the photo's i was hoping for. I think this lens if a good copy is simply great. I will send it back to Sigma. I bought it from a sigma dealer and they say they will help.
Thanks, Guys
