1/250, ISO400, handheld. Nice portrait lens!
Lol ... so what was that with the FOV and subject width, about 100 yards of air between you and the subjects?!

Congrats. Great thread.

Yes, if the lens were autofcus, it would make life so much easier. Well at least you know you can handhold it in a pinch if you really had to. It goes without saying that a nice big heavy tripod is always better.

Keep experimenting with it. You will know what you will need for the quality you want, and for the situation you’re going to use it for.

Another thought, you could try a video camera shoulder pod. One that hooks over your shoulder to disperse the weight. This would also free up a hand to focus. These are just things to consider. They are only suggestions. You may find out that a heavy tripod is best for you after all with this lens.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress

I'm very interested in your thoughts Roy, as well as Mo and Piotr if you're reading this...
I'm really impressed that you want and as I see you use it handheld

I've never tried to use it this way. When I bought 500/4.5 I bought double bean bag here Wildlife Watching Supplies - Wildlife photography, Nature photography, Photo blinds and My G-Wagen as support for bean bag

So here is my four wheel monopod

for such shots
