Teleconverter(s) ?

Someone that have experience with the Pentax teleconverters ?
Will a Pentax 1.4X-S Teleconverter or Pentax 1.4X-L work with the new lenses DA300F4 and DA200F2.8 ?
If so, will the autofocus work or will it only be in the manual focus mode ?
What about the quality ?

Lots of questions , but I hope somebody out there have some answers.

ALL Pentax tele converters are manual focus, except the Pentax AF-adapter 1.7x, which is used by many as a tc.

The 1.4x-L modell, though being optically great, won't work on your lenses, because it has a very protruding front element, which in all probability will collide with the rear lenses in those lenses you mentioned. It fits only a specific selection of lenses.

See here for a listing of Pentax Teleconverters: Pentax Lens Review Database - Genuine Pentax Teleconverter and Adapter Reviews and Specifications

At the moment, it seems the 1.4x-L (which is indeed quite impressive, optically) only supports these lenses:

SMC Pentax-FA* 200mm F2.8
SMC Pentax-A* 300mm F2.8
SMC Pentax-FA* 300mm F2.8
SMC Pentax-A* 400mm F2.8
SMC Pentax-A 500mm F4.5
SMC Pentax-F* 600mm F4
SMC Pentax-FA* 600mm F4
SMC Pentax-A* 600mm F5.6
SMC Pentax 500mm F4.5
SMC Pentax 1000mm F8
SMC Pentax A 1200mm F8
SMC Pentax 135-600mm F6.7
SMC Pentax F* 250-600mm F5.6
SMC Pentax FA* 250-600mm F5.6
SMC Pentax 400-600mm F8-12
SMC Pentax-A* Macro 200mm F4

If anyone has tested it with the new FA* tele primes, please let me know, as this list was made prior to their introduction. I presume what Ben said is correct, however, and that in all likeliness, there isn't enough room before the back element to fit the TC.

I had DA* 300 and F 1.7X before. The SDM on the DA*300 did not work. And the autofocus relied on the back and forth moving of F 1.7X.

The use of A 1.4X will make DA*300 a manual focus lens for sure.

I asked here, and it seems the L is not compatible with the DA*'s. The S will make them manual focus, however.

If needing a TC that works with SDM ... you are best off using a tamron x1.4 TC MC4 model ... with the extra contact for SDM.

Have tested it on LanceB's DA*300 in average light ... and the AF worked on that. That was on his K20D at the time.

I know it is not a Pentax TC ... but it is an option that will allow AF with SDM.

I can confirm that the Tamron 1.4x TC (Pz-AF MC4) works well with the DA*300, both in terms of SDM function as well as IQ. It also works pretty well with the DA*60-250 and DA*50-135, although somewhat surprisingly it was the least consistent in terms of AF-SDM function with the DA*50-135. I would often have to relock when it didn't lock on the first try or manually focus close and then use AF in order to lock on the first try with the 50-135, less so with the 60-250.

EDIT: I noticed the OP asked about the DA*200/2.8 as well. I should have a copy of the DA*200 tomorrow afternoon so I will try the Tamron 1.4x and report back on how it works.
