DA 50-200 + teleconverter?

Hi

I know the Da 50-200mm is not a fast lens but have anyone tried to couple a teleconverter to it? I am interested to know how it perform.

Thanks

You'd need an AF convertor to use with DA50-200. the DA series (FAJ inclu.) have no aperture rings. So if you use any ol' teleconvertor, you'll severe contact between the lens and camera and the DA-50-200 will just drop to f32 or w.e its min aperture is.

So either..

1 - you blow big bucks on an AF/aperture contact linking teleconvertor..and end up with a sllooow lens. 100-400 f8-11...lol

2 - buy a screw on teleconvertor..like a Tcon17 or TC14ED but not recommended as it will put considerable weight on the lens tube...strains your AF motor due to added weight...which could sorten its lifespan over time.

3 - spend the money on a manual 300mm, 400mm..etc

I'd say #3 is your best choice.

I've used a Tamron 1.4x teleconverter with the 50-200 and with my Tokina 80-400 and it worked with both. I don't think I have any posted pics though because they were shots of a friend's daughter's lacrosse game. It was also a bright day, so I didn't have to worry too much about the speed dropping way down, plus I like wider apertures.

I think I've used the teleconverter/50-200 combo other times as well, but can't think of when off hand. If I do, and find some pics, I'll post a couple. The Tamron's not terribly expensive.

Thanks for the info.

I am looking to buy either the Sigma 70-300 APO or the Tamron 70-300 DI but I just thought that my DA 50-200 would be redundant then, hence the thought of using a teleconverter to make it into a 280mm...

Well, from what I've seen and heard, the DA has an advantage over the Tamron and Sigma in the IQ field. Even if that's negligable to you, the DA still covers 50-70mm, which the other two don't.

Not only that, but a teleconverter will be useful on other lenses present and future.

I just checked, the cost of the Tamron 1.4x teleconverter is not too far off from a new sigma 70-300 APO...so perhaps I will just get the sigma lens.

yea, roys right. Even if you do get an aperture linked teleconvertor, I wouldn't be suprised if a Mirror lens bests the DA50-200+TC1.4 or TC2.0.
