Need help deciding to trade a lens for a flash

Hello,

It has been a long time since I wrote in this forum even though I read it almost everyday.

I still have my k100d super and I'm not planning to replace for at least another year.
I have 4 lens and one flash:
  • Pentax SMC DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED
  • Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro
  • Pentax SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4
  • Vivitar Series 1 28-105mm f/2.8-3.8
  • Pentax AF280T

I'm not using my Sigma 17-70 that much since I got the vivitar. I have a hard time using my flash. I was wondering if it would be good to trade (or sale and buy) my Sigma 17-70 to get a flash like the Metz 48 and of course sale my AF280T flash as well.

What do you guys think? Would it be worth it?

I have 3 kids now, so with all the indoor plays and sports they will do I will need a flash before I can upgrade to a newer camera with better ISO. Plus, I really would like to use my flash more... for now, I try different settings until I get something that works... which isn't great.

Thank you for your help!

Looking at the market place, I could find a way to trade my Sigma 17-70 with a Pentax AF540 + a few $.

The day I'll buy a new camera I'll get it with the kit lens. By doing so I will have a 18mm lens again.

Anyone could help me out between keeping the sigma or getting a better and automatic flash?

The AF280T is a very limited flash. Personally, I prefer A/M flash instead of P-TTL. You will have more control and consistency. I would advice buying a flash that can tilt/swivel with a full range of aperture in A mode and at least 1-1/64 adjustment in M mode. Metz 48 seems to be a fine flash except w/o A flash if I am not mistaken. When P-TTL failed, A flash will be handy. But perhaps Metz does P-TTL better than Pentax? Personally, I recommend against Pentax made AF360/540FGZ for their poor build, unreliable P-TTL and stupid user interface.

I think you need a flash with oomph. A nice budget flash is the Sigma EF-530-DG, can be had for $149. It is a zoom flash with PTTL and a great reach, tilt and swivel. I am astonished how well it performs.

Thanks for the info... so you do think I should sell my lens and get a flash.
I believe I could sell this lens for around $270 + my current flash for around $35 so I should get my $300.

What flash should I get a $300?
I know I can get the Pentax AF540 in this forum or get a new Metz 48. What should I get?
I can consider the Sigma EF-530-DG but since I can have more money it might be better to get a higher flash.

Thank,
Yael

I just bought the Metz 48 last week for $224. Amazon, Adorama both had appox the same price. I bought fron Amazon because the next day shipping was much cheaper ( I shopped and waited until the last minute). You might find it even cheaper.

Is the Pentax AF540 used better than a brand new Metz 48?
Do you know of a website that would compare the 2?

I have the Metz 48 and I find that this is the single most useful piece of equipment I have, especially for taking shots of kids. Whether you choose the Pentax or the Metz is irrelevant, IMO, both support tilt and swivel, which is what matters.
