I don't have MTF data, but I owned an A50 f1.4 and an F50 f1,7, and the difference between the two was obvious until f2.8. You can believe me or not, that's up to you.

Now, of course, both lenses are fine by themselves. But since we're comparing, I'll telling you what my experience taught me.

I posted the F f1.7 mtf compared the F f1.4 above. I didn't ask you about your A lens. Nor did I ask about your anecdotal comment. There's plenty of that on flickr and PBase. The fact is, the F is a better choice if the lens is in good shape because of the price.

Edit: I'll post if for you again since you didn't see it the 1st time.

Here is the mtf from the test of the F f1.4 and f1.7 from above.

F 50mm f1.4 Weighted MTF 50 mm: f1.4 0.52 | f2 0.71 | f2.8 0.80 | f4 0.85 | f8 0.87
F 50mm f1.7 Weighted MTF 50 mm: f1.7 0.65 | f2 0.71 | f2.8 0.75 | f4 0.82 | f8 0.86
FA 50mm f1.4 Weighted MTF 50 mm: f1.4 0.50 | f2 0.66 | f2.8 0.75 | f4 0.82 | f8 0.84
FA 43mm f1.9 Weighted MTF 43 mm:_______ |f1.9 0.56 | f2.8 0.72 | f4 0.75 | f8 0.81

They don't have the data for the FA 1.7 lens (or the A 1.4 and 1.7.

I went for the F 50mm f/1.7. Optically it is mint, externally it's excellent, actually I'd consider it mint too. I'll take a few example shots and post them later today.

You were the one that didn't read my posts and come out with the "believe me or not line" about an A lens that hadn't been part of the discussion.

I like the look of the F line, especially the 50mm and 28mm prime lenses. The F 35-70mm I like the look of as well. When the barrel gets long for some of the longer zooms and tele, both the F and FA start resembling conduit.

1-That does not warrant being rude.

2-The A 50 f1,4 is optically the same as the F or FA.

3-I did read your post. I value user experience more than test charts. Other things than MTF contribute to perceived sharpness.

If you don't want a quip coming at you, don't dish them out. Remember your comment?

The A may be optically the same as the F or FA, but the F and FA deliver different results in mtf analysis. I wasn't debating the usefulness of mtf data and experience. Actual controlled experimental data isn't as readily available as "experience" and anecdotal evidence. Furthermore, I wasn't looking for mtf for the f1.4 in the original post. Lastly, you ignored that I had found the mtf for the F 1.7 etc and proceeded to imply I was doubting you after the fact.

All things being equal, I think the F 1.4 version of the AF lenses may be the best since it is virtually a tie on the test specs with the F 1.7 but is faster. The A wasn't part of this discussion prior. Let it rest. He got a good lens at a good price and the thread is essentially through for now.
