Has anyone tried the new Sigma 8-16mm? Seems a hell of a lens...

Photozone gave it their rare "Highly Recommended" accolade:

Sigma AF 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM - Lab Test / Review

Nice looking lens, too.

Looks to be an impressive addition to the UWA lens family - only I won't be trying it until it comes out in a Pentax mount...

They have them advetised here $899- Sigma Lens 8-16 mm F/4.5-5.6 DC HSM - Digital Camera Warehouse Australia

I read a review yesterday on it, it stated that it gets barrell distortion at 8mm.

Would like to hear from some members once they get it.

i tried it at a shop but its hard to tell from the tiny LCD on digicams. looks wide as hell tho just like a 12-24 on d700. but not looking to shell $700 on a single lens anyways.

It's optically based on the fundamentals of Nikon's amazing 14-24 (the lens that made me switch to Pentax).

If you want UWA at a fairly decent price, this is the one. It's no surprise that there is some distortion at the widest of the wide end. I'm interested in this lens.

This UWA looks like a serious contender.
I was a bit dismayed with the Photozone review only for this part:

(Quote):
" Unfortunately we need to report that the centering quality of the tested sample was less than stellar. "Therefore ... highly recommended (if you can find a good sample)!"

This would be a serious consideration from my part, however, further tests are required to find out if this "less-than-stellar" contering will have been corrected.

Nonetheless, one very impressive UWA lens. Hopefully, they will have it in Pentax mount too.

The Pentax version is on the 2010 price list for distributors already ($CAN):

Pentax mount is available in the UK.

Here in Hong Kong I've been having a little trouble locating it.

One shop quoted US$625 for Canon, and they'll try and find me a K mount.

This lens has leap-frogged all of my LBA contenders!

Impressive, to say the least.
I thought this would be rather stretching the limits with a rectilinear of that focal range, but I see that it is very possible and real.
Thank for the link.

Thanks, I got the site, and your link which did not provide info on the 8-16mm. The Gentec site does though.

I hate to be nit picky, but they say it's the widest rectangular lens on the market, with a 35mm equivalent of 12.8-25.6mm, but Voigtlander has had a rectangular 12mm 5.6 lens available for several years.

Also, I am very impressed with it's distortion control.
