Pentax F 50mm f/1.7 - samples

I did the usual walk in a nearby park to get a few sample photos from my newly acquired Pentax F 50mm f/1.7. I like the results even though the subjects aren't the greatest. Color is very accurate, sharp wide open and the bokeh is just fine by me.

We are going on a long-weekend trip tomorrow until Monday and I'm traveling very light. This will be my only lens and it will get tested under many conditions ;-)

No PP except my typical USM treatment. All at f/1.7 except the 3rd photo which is f/2.4

Very nice. I think the F50/1.7, especially at the price you got it for, was an excellent choice. Enjoy!

Here is another at f/2.4. My daughter posing and me trying to make a smile but a laugh came out just after I took this.

...and of course, a beauty shot of the lens on the K-x. Taken with the better half's Panasonic ZS1;

this is like rubbing salt to my wounds.
This lens is perhaps the only one of those I have sold that I really regret selling

Even though you have the 43? I ask because I had intented to sell my FA50/1.7 now that I bought the 43. Should I reconsider?

You have a lovely daughter and you caught her expression nicely with the lens.
A good start with a new lens is always a good thing.

Even though I have 43ltd, and K50/1.2 and K55/1.8.
F50/1.7 had something in it IMO. Very cool (it terms of colour temperature) rendering compared to other Pentax glass I have used. K50 comes close but not close enough. F50/1.7 focuses super fast, I´d say as fast as DA40 but maybe more precisely and tad louder. So it´s quite a bit faster than FA43 in terms AF. As well f1.7 @ 50mm isolates your object much more than f1.9 @ 43mm!

I was doing "layman´s" shoot out last night between my above mentioned trio. Will post findings when back in the UK and I´ll have some spare time on my hands...

Unless you are not planning F/FA 50/1.4 or DA*55 I would say keep 50/1.7. You will not regret IMO....

Everybody loves their F50 f1,7... Welcome to the club! And it looks so nice, vintage and all.

It does look large on the Kx, which can be a bit misleading

If I do decide to get rid of it, I'll try and remember to PM you and give you a heads up if you like

I've been thinking more and more about the DA*55 as I really like the results I get from my other DA* lenses. But having just picked up the 31 and 43 within the last month, I was hoping to keep my LBA under control for at least a little while

I had a FA50/1.4 for several years, but sold it when I bought the FA50/1.7 last year. It was a toss up when I did decide to sell one, but I overall I decided that I preferred the sharpness/contrast of the 1.7 to the 1.4 at apertures below 2.8, which is where I was using it most of the time.

And I agree about the AF speed, it's pretty fast (on both my Kx and K7). It's on par with the DA40 (which I used to own before buying the FA43) in terms of AF speed. As you pointed out, it's a little louder too, which is most noticable if it misses the first lock and has to cycles to the extreme ends before locking.

First of all, good shots OP. Glad you snagged the F 50/1.7 when you had the chance.

dgaies, in all seriousness, I would not sell the FA 50/1.7, unless you happen to pick up an F 50/1.7 in its place. I simply think the Pentax 50/1.7s are too good to let go once you get them in your hands, and unless Pentax surprises us, what's out there in the used market is all there is of the F and FA 50/1.7s.

With that in mind, I picked up my F 50/1.7 from KEH last year for like $150. They pop up there now and then, and I just saw another one pop up within the past few weeks. They obviously go very quickly, but if you catch it right, you can get the F 50 for that price. Your FA would easily sell for over $200 at this point. So you'd come out ahead on that trade, with little to no difference b/w the F and FA. Just my .02 cents.
