Lens Price Question

I have a K10D with a Kit Lens

I am looking to get a zoom.

why is a 28-200 more than a 70-300?

which is better?

Could be build quality, could be image quality, could be features (low dispersion glass/apochromatic vs. not)

Often aperture could factor into it, but I believe pretty much all 28-200s have the same aperture at maximum zoom (5.6).

What brand/model of 28-200 and 70-300? Sigma has at least two quality grades of 70-300.

Also, while the 70-300 has more reach, you'll notice that it has more range. 1.5 times 200 is 300, but 1.5 times 28 is far less than 70.

Most people think that the image quality of "superzooms" such as the 28-200s from various manufacturers is rather bad. If you're looking for decent IQ, I'd suggest the DA 50-200 instead of a 28-200 from either Sigma or Tamron.

If you're looking for longer reach, both the Tamron and Sigma 70-300s have advantages and disadvantages. As I understand it, the Tamron is far more susceptible to purple fringing than the Sigma, but is sharper than the Sigma. The Tamron Di LD 70-300 is $150 (Amazon) to $180 (B&H), while the Sigma is $220ish for the APO DG.

I have both the DA 50-200 and Tamron 70-300 and like both.

There's absolutely no point asking the question of why they cost more - just accept it!

The likely answer would be the 28-200 is a more complex optical design and more challeging to design.

To replace your kit lens, then the 28-200 might be the one, but to add to the kit lens, then 70-300 would get you a little further.

I guess the next question ... what is your budget ... and what you can afford (which is the best quality lens to what your budget allows) ... and if you can stretch it a little bit more if possible.
