I hope for everyone that doesn't own the FA* 85 this isn't the case. As for "clear runway winner," I'm dubious. I think that the only way it's going to win is that the FA* isn't in production anymore, and a shame that is.

I'm sure it would be hard to be optimistic, especially for those who already own the FA*85/1.4. I mean I could understand why one shouldn't even consider buying a Sigma if the person already have an FA* 85 which is a great lens. I guess it's a waiting game as far a IQ performance is concerned. if it's better than the FA*, then it's one possible reason to upgrade. if it's as good than the FA*, then the HSM may play a part on that one. if it's slightly inferior to the FA*, then the reason would be having a cheaper AF HSM 85 lens. from what I can say, the main selling point of this lens is the AF feature of such lens and quite affordable pricewise. we have too much MF lenses at this focal length that are cheap but great performers yet lack the AF function. the FA77 could be a cheaper alternative, but mind you it's 8mm short and half a speed slower. BOKEH however, can be user subjective.

bad news, I had to cancel my pre-order due to some unexpected events (my workstation screwed up and sadly, my budget for the lens needed to be diverted for a new workstation purchase). my lens purchase would be put on hold indefinitely til I have the sufficient resources to buy one. that would mean I won't be able to do some testing and evaluation of this lens when it comes out in July and August. anyway, I would think that some people who pre-ordered would do some detailed and thorough testing / evaluation (pros and cons) of the the lens' IQ, build, and performance.

Lately, its been hard to justify such a price (or the FA*'s for that matter) when you can get a great 50mm F/1.4 for sub-300's. So you get 35 extra mm.... hardly worth triple the price IMO.

And this is coming from the guy who thinks 85mm on APCS is the perfect focal length

(i do still lust after such a lens, just this time it wont ever become a reality)

I also had a Sigma 85 on pre-order and canceled it. In my case, it was because:

1. I got sick of waiting (patience is not a virtue I typically possess)

2. I decided to give the FA77 another go (I had and sold one previously)

I'm really glad I did it. I'm loving the 77 this time around. Don't know if I got a better copy or if I just "get" how to use it now. The 85 was going to be primarily for portraits and I have no doubt that it will be excellent for them. I have a lot of doubt, however, that it will be as magical as the 77.

The way I look at it, I already have a super-sharp portrait lens in the DA*55. Now, I also have a portrait lens with character. Neither of these traits is less usable or less desirable than the other, IMO.

Plus, if the 85 turns out to be truly phenomenal, I can always get one later. Maybe they'll even come down a little.

Yes, it is quite a bummer that Sigma delayed the release of the lens. although it's a turn-off for most of us, I think it was a good decision by Sigma, especially if they have to do some additional modifications.

the FA77 is indeed a nice lens to have, although an 85 will always give that certain perspective that is much preferable than it's shorter length counterparts.

Assuming the 85mm works with a TC, an about 130mm f2 with a 1.5x TC, about a 150mm f2.4 with a 1.7x, and 170mm f2.8 for a 2x TC, seems like it could work out to be a good deal.

assuming it does work with various TC and performs at an exceptional level, it would be the closest thing we can come up to an A* 135/1.8, faster than the 150/4, and a perfect focal length at 170mm for candid portraits.
