Well, given the first-party equivalents go for $1k+, I suppose it'll all come down to the optical performance.

Its WAY to close to 1st party equivalents price wise, IMO...

It's still a $200 savings on MSRP vs. the used price for Pentax (not to mention the Pentax equivalent isn't even available new anymore), and the street price is likely to be lower.

At this price, personally I'd rather get the Pentax just because its a Pentax FA* if not because of its performance. I guess I'll have to keep an eye on the prices from here on out because at $900 I'd say its a bit ridiculous.

That's a street price, retail is 1099€ (so 1099$)

I'd consider also resale value:
you pay 1k for a used pentax (if you mange to find) and by reselling you could even make a little profit over it if, i really can't figure the Sigma to keep up with those used values.

I was expecting it to cost more.

If you multiply that price by 2 ... that's what it'll end up being through distributers here in Australia.

The IQ of the Pentax FA* wide open is just so amazing that this lens has stiff competition. *Maybe* it will have similarly amazing IQ, or maybe it will just suffice for those that want to shoot 85/1.4 and cannot find the FA*

The FA 77mm ltd loses only on f1.8 vs. f1.4. Size and build quality kicks the hell out of the Sigma. There has never been a Sigma lens made that I'd pay that kind of money for except maybe the Sigma 500mm f4.5. Furthermore, it is still way to close to the price of what a used FA* 85mm or NEW Zeiss 85mm f1.4 can be had for.

I'll wait, like I always do, to see where the price stabilizes at after a year or so. Shrug.

Thank you

I don't think that people would go for the FA* just for it's resale value. it is more like needs and considering the extreme rarity and price of the FA* in the used market makes the demand even higher. this is not really a buy and sell item if you ask me.

so far, my initial guess regarding the pricing is quite near than I anticipated. a bit $150 more than I would had hoped for but still pretty much dead on. the street price makes more sense. honestly I did feel a lil bit tentative of such purchase when rumours or initial reports of the expected retail price would cost at around $1,100-$1,300.

honestly, the retail price made me consider getting the FA77 or FA*85 instead for around $900. but this new development swayed me back to what I originally intended to buy.

from what I could tell, the driving factor for the Sigma 85's $900 price tag is it's HSM capability. without it, it would had probably cost at around $650-$700 without the HSM. so I think the price is fair enough for a brand new lens and is pricing competitively against the FA77 which is selling along at the same range (a bit cheaper and more expensive depending on which store or re/seller). if HSM, 8mm range and extra speed does matter to you, then this is the lens for you. size, weight and well-known reputation however, would be the FA77's strongest assets.

it is also $400 dollars less than it's 85mm equivalent manual focus CZ lens. but some people might be favoring an AF lens this time, that includes myself.

don't even bother to debate or discuss about the FA* because that lens is just too impossible to get, unless Pentax decides to resume it's production.

I give it a day before I decide to place my order.
