I saw this in B&H Video, they don't come with the tool though as shown in Pete's picture

These are the flangless adapters. they maintain infinity focus of your m42 lenses.



Note the profile of the adapter. The one on the left is the third party version and the ring on the right is the genuine offering from Pentax. People like the genuine one better because you can take it out with just your fingernail. (The bayonet teeth on the pentax version is thinner and thus generate less resistance when unmounting).

Here is a photo of the adapter ring mounted on the camera. Notice how it is again flush with the K Mount Plate.

Yup thats the right one. The packaging should come with the removal tool. If you are unsure, just drop B&H an email/phone call. $15 is probably the cheapest you'll find. I spent like $25 on my third party ring...only to find the genuine one in a local pawn shop like a month later for $20.

Also, those adapters don't allow focusing to infinity because they stick out too far..

not all if them. you can get a good one from B&H and adorama.. they are about $18 delivered.

Yes, this is a long winding thread. I hope I am not misleading anyone to jump over the purchase. All discussion shows that super takumar is an overall better lens than Takumar. And the takumar has lens flare lacking the SMC coating. But no more remorse for me over the $37 LBA crush triggered after coffee at 4:00pm with expiring notice from eBay one weekday afternoon



And one test image with lens flare in this one shot on purpose in bright daylight around 2:00pm.



I will be ordering the M42 adapter from B&H photo later this week. I can't wait to try on my three unnoticed Praktica M42 compatible lens that I had in my old analog camera bags: 50mm f/1.8, 135 schneidar f/3.5 and 28-70 Praktica f/3.5.

Schneidar eh?..sound good! So is this Praktica 28-70/3.5 going to mean extra shelf time for your Tak28-80? =P

Oh btw, try to look into a lens hood or hold your hand out to keep stray light from hitting your takumar. (Purple flare blobs on the palm tree in the last photo.)

Thanks Pete, my Praktica 28-70 is much smaller and lighter than the Takumar 28-80 but the zoom ring and focusing ring are so loose that I don't seem to be impressed and also the lens has some haze inside. I will know more when M42 adapter arrives.

Haze? how bad is it? If its really foggy, you got a built in softie/diffuser! Great for romantic-ish style portraits!

Thanks Pete, I re-look at the Pentagon 28-70 f/3.5 - 5.6, it has dust and probably not haze, I think. I can't tell as I am very inexperienced with lens -- my 4th month with dSLR.

I have few more indoor test shots from the $37 lens. It is harder to do manual focusing at night but it does reasonably well for well lit indoor for me.

I have a copy of the Takumar 28-80 F Zoom, and while it isn't a GREAT lens, it has surprised me a few times with some of the shots i have gotten with it.

I really want to thank you for helping me all along my venture into M42 lens. And I love it. I wonder if I can ask you another favor, can I use your m42 adapter picture for blogging in my tech corner blog? I want to show your dual adapter picture in my blog so that I can pass along to others how excited I am even with the 'general' adapter from bhphoto costing $14.99 and $20.00 after shipping. The general adapter works out really well for me. I have no issues in getting it in and out. The first time is a bit scary but no problem the 2nd time and afterwards.
