telephoto

My interests are portrait and family type pictures including grandchildren. Action and low light shots come into play quite often. I am thinking about the SMC P DA 50-300 telephoto lens.
Money is always a consideration but if there is another lens that might better suit my interests I would seriously take a look at that lens before I order the lens mentioned above.

The 50 to 300 is way too long for portraits and grandchildren stuff, unless you stick them in a field 50 yards away.

What lens do you have now?

You're talking mostly indoor or backyard stuff, where 50 would be the LONGEST length you'd really need.

I currently have the lens kit 18-55 but seems like that does not always reach far enough.

Grandchildren will also involve sports events so that will require some type of telephoto lens.

Agreed. I've owned the DA 55-300 and think it would make a good choice for what you're looking for. IQ is excellent and it's a really nice range for outdoor use. For the difference in price, I would get the DA and not the DA L version as having quick-shift focusing is very helpful, plus you get the lens hood and a metal mount.

If you want to spend more money, you could consider either of the longer DA* zooms. The DA*50-135/2.8 will give you extra speed and is a great portrait lens. You'll lose some reach, but 135mm on a crop sensor really isn't too bad and most of the time it's enough. The DA*60-250/4 gives you the extra reach back, but is heavier, slower and more expensive. Plus you lose 10mm on the wide end, which doesn't sound like a lot, but I do find that I miss it sometimes. Both are great lenses, although they both come with a steep price tag and aren't nearly as light and compact as the 55-300.

I would second the 50-135 or either sigma or tamron 70-200F2.8

they are bigger and heavier but the additional soeed in low light is important

Yeah, I forgot to mention the Tamron 70-200/2.8 as an option as well. It's heavier than the 50-135, but gives you a little extra reach. I just posted one of these pictures elsewhere on the forum, but here are three I took this past weekend with the Tamron 70-200/2.8.

Your information was just what I was looking for. Speed is an important consideration and I will research the suggestions mentioned. Thank you. Those pictures were outstanding.
