Coming Soon: Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Scroll down past news of the new Sigma SD-15 (a compelling product in it's own right).
Sigma UK to start shipping SD15 digital camera: Digital Photography Review

Canon gets it first, eventually Pentax. Wonder how this will stack up against the DA* 16-50/2.8 (SDM) and Tamron 17-50/2.8 (screwdrive) in terms of IQ. Assuming one does not require weather-sealing, the EX quality Sigma with a reliable HSM might be an excellent alternative to the DA*.

The Sigma EX line is top-notch. <flame> I actually prefer the EX 30/1.4 over the 31ltd </flame>...

I'm with you, MrPetkus

I really love my EX30 1.4 also. As I've posted before, my love for that lens is what will make me a first day customer for the new 85 1.4. I've never had or used a FA31, but I'm so satisfied with the EX30 that I'm pretty sure I'll never buy one. I had a FA77 and was pretty underwhelmed, though I know I'm in the minority. I figured if that's the FA limited "magic", then count me out. I get far more magic out of my DA*55.

I'm pretty satisfied with my DA*16-50 though, so I can only imagine looking at this new Sigma 17-50 if something bad should happen to it (and according to some, that's pretty likely).

A few Canon owners have gotten theirs in the last few days:
Flickr: Discussing First test EX 17-50mm! in Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM (CANON MOUNT/USERS)
Flickr: Discussing Sigma EX 17-50mm OS in Sigma Lenses

I did read somewhere that the 17-50mm F2.8 uses a micro motor HSM (like the DA* 16-50mm F2.8, and we all know what SDM on that is like) instead of a ring HSM.

Is that for a full frame or crop sensor?

Unless Sigma diverges from other EX DC Pentax lenses it will be APS-C...

Yes, according to Sigma's website it's for APS-c.

Maybe a dumb question, but is there any view on whether the OS on these lenses does better / worse than the in-built SR?

I believe I read either here or on the "other" forum that someone who tested this found that the in-lens OS works a bit better than SR. Plus there's the obvious advantage of a stabilized VF. Trying to use both systems simultaneously definitely screws things up, though.
