How so if you can't control the aperture on the DA40, you can't control the aperture on any lens.

Definitely true for focus. Not true for aperture. While you *can* use the aperture ring, it was designed to be used on cameras that could actually read the aperture ring and adjust the meter reading accordingly. On a DSLR, it's definitely a compromise. It's far easier to use manual mode with a DA/FA/A lens than with a K/M lens.

It is indeed a good general purpose lens, and it pairs nicely with the DA40.
