Like Marc said, leave in "A" if you want to play it safe.

Both of my SMC A50 f1,7s take fair amount of effort to turn, think it is just the way they are. Therefore I actually do use the aperture ring without fear.
Good deal for that amount IMO.

Cheers, Mike.

That's an excellent price, I just purchased one in mint condition for $110.
So funny enough I just got another one off of Craigslist for $50 today...woohoo a spare!

I also heeded the advice of "leave it in A-mode" but still managed to break one of the internal retaining clips on the aperature ring by accidentally gripping the ring as I mounted the lens onto the camera. So, watch out for that as well.

Luckily, the magic juju power didn't leak out when the ring broke.

This lens is by far my most valuable.

I believe it deserves it's own club

Don't mess with the aperture ring at all - it's notoriously fragile on this lens. Leave it in "A" position permanently and you're better off on all counts.
What he said...

Almost all Pentax-A 50/1.7 have or will develop problems with the aperture ring. The problem is caused by a broken plastic part.

Yes, plastic wears out, dry rots. Mine have not yet, got them in mid 80`s , still working fine.
I am the original owner.

Cheers, Mike.

With the few photos I've taken with the 50 A 1.7, it's become one of my favorite lenses to shoot with.

That and my Sigma 28-80 that I picked up for $20 on a closeout steal.
