Recommendations in 50-200 zoom range

I have the DA 18-55 and Sigma 55-200. Am looking at changing Sigma to Pentax DA 50 -200, for reduction in size and apparently better pictures (wish it were that simple ). Is there any others in that range should be looking at?

The F 70-210 is a nice lens- it's small (49mm), too! You'll have to buy it used, though, but keh.com has them in excellent condition

I also have the FA 80-320- it's very good as well, but perhaps too much on the tele side for what you're looking at.

In cheaper glass in that zoom range I have owned the following

Sigma 55-200
Tamron 70-300 LD
Pentax DA 50-200
Pentax F 70-210

Personally I think the Pentax lenses were the better of them.. Though I liked the macro function of the Tamron..

The DA 50-200 is a nice little lens and is better in my opinion than the Sigma.. It is NOT going to blow you away in comparison to the Sigma but will be more consistant across it's range and has better colour/contrast..

As for the Pentax F 70-210, I think it was about on par with the DA 50-200 but is heavier, which may not be what you are looking for??

Not tooooo concerned about weight as I wouldn't do too much walking around with it. Something a bit faster than the 4-5.6 of the Sgma and Pentax would be nice though. Yeah yeah, I know, buy a prime. But for my use a zoom is so much more versatile and useful.

Thanks for the replies, I'll look into the others mentioned.

And used glass isn't so abundant here.

Well if weight isn't a big concern, and you are looking for speed, you might look at one of the f2.8 70-200s from Sigma or Tokina. They are not cheap though.

Do you need Autofocus, the Pentax A 70-210 constant 4 will be a fairly cheap option that maintains f4 throughout the range..

Otherwise as suggested above you may have to jump up to a much more expensive lens... either the Sigma 70-200 2.8 or the Tokina 80-200 2.8

Another option...

... is Sigma 100-300/f4. I heard that it is a very good lens.

cheers

I have been using the Sigma APO 135-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG for three months now and this might be a better choice as you will increase the zoom capability and still having a rather fast lens (for a 400 mm).
Price is very nice for this lens.

Pictures are sharp and the lens isn't too slow focussing.

I also own the Pentax 50-200, and althoufh this lens is'nt the fastest, it allways results in christal-sharp images, as long as you have enough light.
It is a very good lens for it's price, with better contrast and sharper than the Sigma lens.

Why this lens might be interesting, it is intended to use on DSLR's only, so all the light is used on the CCD.

If you are on a budget, take the Pentax lens, but you won't get mucht more than the lens you already have. If you can spend some more, try the Sigma 135-400, the most affordable 'ultra' zoom lens.
