M42 Super Takumar 35mm 3.5 lens hood replacement.

I have a M42 screw mount Super Takumar 35mm 3.5 lens that is missing the original lens hood. The original lens hood seems difficult to find. What is the best replacement lens hood that will fit this lens?

Thanks,

Jeff

You can find it--if you're willing to spend the same money that you spent for the lens!

That's why I like my Cokin clone system. I have rings for every possible filter diameter, and I just clip on as many hood modules as I need for the focal length I'm using.

The square slip on hood for the 49mm filter threaded version of the Super Tak/S-M-C Tak 28mm f3.5 will fit this lens and can be scrounged up from a few places for ~ $10.

Thanks for the replies. I actually have the M42 SMC 28mm 3.5 with the 49mm filter threads and original rectangular lens hood so I guess that was a dumb question. I am really not concerned with owning the correct lens hood for the 35mm version, just one that does the job. Thanks again.

You touched on an important point:

You want the deepest hood that your focal length will allow for maximum effect and contrast. So if you have a 28mm lens with a 49mm filter thread and that specific hood, and a 105 with the same thread, you wouldn't want to use that hood on the 105.

Using one for the 28 on a 35 won't kill you, but you want the deepest hood you can get without vignetting.

The square hood for the Super Tak/S-M-C Tak 28mm f3.5 is actually 31mm long (deep) compared to 24mm for the round Asahi Standard Hood for the 50mm f1.4/1.7 M, A, F and FA lenses. Plus, it is adjusted for aspect ratio. The Super Tak standard round hood is at 30mm in length.

I would give the 28mm f3.5 square hood a try. Its the type that fits on the outer lens barrel at the threads. That hood is usually relatively cheap compared to some of the more rare hoods and it is more common. I like its dimensions even though it is for the 28.

Edit: The hoods for some of the less common lenses like the S.T. 28mm model 1 that has the 58mm threads and the Auto Tak 35mm f2.3 with 62mm have some cool hoods but they bring $30 to $70 USD. My solution is that I got a nice Nikon HN-22 hood from KEH for $6 and it fits the Auto Tak 35mm's 62mm thread. With a 58-62 Tiffen step up ring I picked up used for 99 cents, I can use it on my Model 1 28mm as well and its a cool looking hood.
