Based on the Ser #, I would say there is a good chance your lens was made in late 1964 or 65 which would be consistent with it being the early version. If 354 or 743 is on the A/M switch it would confirm this.

does it being an early version make it more valuable? Also do all taks withe the A/M make them an early version? Where is the best place to find accurate history of takumar lenses, I know this forum has an awesome data base, However I keep finding differnt stuff than is listed. Thanks

It isn't going to affect the price much. It has the 5 elements in 4 groups instead of 4/4 like the newer S.T. and S.M.C. f3.5 versions. The Super Taks, S-M-C Taks, SMC Taks and the last version of the Auto Tak 55mm f1.8 have the A-M switch on them. The Taks that lack the switch will either be Auto Takumars or Takumars (i.e. pre-set).

As far as history goes:

The Asahi Optical Historical Club is accurate but there are a few inconsistencies.

English

Frank Mechelhof in Germany has a nice site. A lot of the serial number data is based in part on the now defunct m-fortytwo project that Nigel Utting had going.

Early Asahi Pentax Cameras and Takumar lenses: Main Page

Early Pentax Takumar Lenses

There is some info here but it is rather incomplete.

Die Cast Pro - Pentax Lenses

There are a couple of books.

Asahi Pentax and Pentax SLR 35mm cameras 1952-1989
by Cecchi 1991 that can be picked up for around $25-30. Its a worth while book but it does have a couple of typos and mistakes in it.

The best info on this kind of stuff regarding variations, ser # etc in the m42 gear is thought to be
The Ultimate Asahi Pentax Screw Mount Guide 1952-1977
by Van Oosten 1999 but its out of print and the price is beyond ridiculous at ~$400 when it shows up on Freak Bait or Amazon.

Cecchi has a more recent book but its in Italian only.
