DA Star 55mm 1.4 reliability?

I did a lot of research before I switched to Pentax but never came across anything that mentioned SDM issues. I have recently bought a k20d, K7, DA* 55mm, and DA* 50-135. After reading the nightmare stories that people have had with the 50-135 I am very concerned and may return the glass. Have there been issues with the 55mm as well? I came to Pentax for the glass, and because I used to own a few P&S pentax cameras and was VERY happy with them. I do not plan to switch back so where do I go from here? Any advice?

James

James,

If you have bought recent versions of the 50-135 and 55mm SDM Limited lenses your possibility of an SDM failure now seem to be small. There were a number of failures, especially in the 15-60 f2.8 lens, when lenses with SDM were first introduced some two years ago, but the rate of failure seems to have greatly decreased.

From your location, you could be in America, so get the Pentax three year warranty on the lenses and use them alot.

Regards
Chris Stone

The DA*55/200 were are two lenses that I haven't heard of to SDM fail. I kept an eye out for this and eventually I bought the 55 just to return it back to shop week later.... (SDM was fine but my K50/1.2 is better )

Wait – you may return the glass because you read some stories? I don't think the seller is impressed. I do think you should base your decision to keep or sell/return based on your own experience.

I bought a DA*50-135mm 5 months ago, and it seems to be holding up well...touch wood.
One thing I noticed about the SDM power contacts - make sure you turn Off the camera before changing the lens , either mounting on or taking it off.

Optically, the DA*50-135mm is Superb. You'd need a prime lens for better IQ.

If the lenses are new, it seems that SDM issues should not bother you more than for other brands.

I got rid of my old 50-135mm and got the FA 77mm for the bulk and fear of SDM issues. Aside from that, the 50-135 is a wonderful piece of glass.

I have looked quite a lot into the SDMgate and it seems that the zooms have it more often(16-50 is the most affected, after that the 50-135). The primes (55mm, 200mm, 300mm) SDM seem ok, low rate of failure.

It's a perfectly valid reason to return equipment. The 16-50 and 50-135 have both proven themselves to have a very high rate of failure, so if equipment reliability is at the forefront of importance, the fact that there are a lot of reported failures is cause for concern.
By the tine the equipment fails, one is generally stuck with it.
To the OP, so far my DA*55/1.4 has been good, but my 60-250 had to go back to Japan for repair on it's SDM adfter about 8 months of riding my camera bag and a very small amount of actual use.

Thanks for all the input guys, I want a fast telephoto, but I dont want reliability issues. I might return it for a limited lens and then pick up the DA 55-300 for my telephoto needs. I dont really do a lot of stuff that I need a telephoto for in low light conditions.....

I hate to admit this but I own both the 16-50 and the 50-135 as well as the 55 and 300 SDM lenses. The 2 zooms I've owned since they were first released. All 4 lenses work as well as the day I took them out of the boxes, regardless of how long I let them sit.

Just used my 3+ year old 16-50 today to take This picture, with SDM AF.. Works fine..
