I sure wish the problems with this lens could be officially declared a thing of the past, because it's on my 'most wanted' list.....but I do worry about the SDM issues, because that's a lot of money to spend only to end up spending to repair as well!
Care to explain a bit further, maybe with a specific example? I can't say I'm seeing what you are.

I submitted this one for this year's world Pentaxium day. I was taking photos at a 90th birthday party and here they were looking at the shots I had just taken. The camera with my DA*16-50 was the one I was also using with a flash, so I accidentally took this at f/8.

Here's another random one I liked. f/4 ISO400

John, you are the reason that I bought a K-x. Your Flickr photos of the red K-x with different lenses mounted on it showed up in Google image search for the term "red Pentax K-x". After seeing them, I bought the red K-x and have loved it to death ever since. You rock. Not enough people know how damn good looking this camera is, which is good in a way.

I've taken better photos because of the fact that it is red, seriously.

Great story, Hangu. Now I'll just wait for Pentax to send me my commission check LOL!

Two from the neighbour's driveway after the rain today.

36mm 1/800 f/2.8 ISO 400

50mm 1/800 f/2.8 ISO 400

Thanks to everyone in this thread for inspiring me to put it back on!

Urkeldaedalus--I love the shot of the two ladies rocking the K-7 & FA 31. Great expressions!

What do you guys think about the DA*16-50 vs. the DA 18-55WR? I still have the kit lens and I keep telling myself the 16-50 isnt worth the price of the upgrade, but man, sometimes I want one anyway! I do already have the DA*50-135.

Personally, I would love to go the * 16-50 route, but the HSM issues have me scared to death

I would not be at all scared of buying a new 16-50 today. They have obviously figured out what the problem was/is and how to fix it. I would be nervous about buying an older, out-of-warranty used one, though. The 16-50 is a blessing to Pentaxians. Anyone who has had both knows how much better it is than the kit lens (any version). The new PopPhoto that arrived yesterday agrees. This months lens guide is for wide-to-tele zoom lenses. The 16-50 received 4.5 out of 5 stars, tied for the highest on the list with the Nikon 17-55 2.8 ED, which, in reality, costs nearly twice as much. They called it "pro-level" and put a "best in class" label on its picture. The 18-55 AL II received 3 stars.

BTW, I am one of those who has never had any problems at all with any of my 3 DA* lenses (knock on wood --- like Michael Scott once said, "I am not superstitious, I'm just a little stitious").

I was reluctant as well John but I bit the bullet 3 months ago and I am very pleased with my copy of the DA* 16~50.

I think (hope) the QC issues are behind us now. This is the best zoom I have ever used.

Hi Tom, that's good to hear in fact.

I am saving-up for an upgrade this year and if Pentax delivers a K7 equivalent with a noise performance equivalent to the Kx, then I'm quite confident that I'll renew my K20's with a * 16-50 to complete my kit.

Otherwise, I'm going to put my cash down toward another lens and a backup D700 in preparation for next year. I don't really want to because I've really come to love my Pentax kit. But my shooting style keep pushing me toward the simplified performance end of things.

Nice shot!

16mm 1/400 sec at f/11 ISO100

26 mm 1/1600 sec at f/4.0 ISO100
I prefocused this shot but didn't totally get it. I still like it though, and it really shows off the colour:
