My 16-50 got a real workout at South Georgia a year ago (shot with 60-250/4):

In those conditions, I obtained this:

Both cameras were K-7.

Wow, thanks for the praise folks!

I should tell you that my roommate on the trip had a Canon 7D that stopped working that day. It had to be dried out for 48 hours before it came back to life.

My two K-7 was dragged straight back into the cabin, from freezing to room temperature, without cover. It struck me as stupid when my rommate told me about his 7D, but the Pentaxes never had a glitch. The 16-50 was mounted throughout, so its WR is certainly up to spec.

I thought the 7D was suppose to withstand temperatures lower than -10C? was it all a hype job by Canon?

I really dunno. Maybe his lens wasn't waterproofed. I noticed several of the Canon shooters on the trip were meticulous about keeping their lenses inside rain covers. My friend didn't.

Anyway, I think it was quite nice that the camera worked flawlessly again after drying up. It speaks of resilience in the electronics, at least.

That pic of the Penguins is really quiet something. Probably the best image I've seen anywhere, in awhile.

You know, if Pentax licensed both your images, and put them on a 2 page spread on a couple of magazines, they just might sell quiet a few 16-50's and even a few K7s (despite the K5 already shipping).

Thanks for sharing.

Yes, but the thing is, you can't expect the camera to just wake up after all the penguins had left already. I mean, if they are going to build something resilient, it should be something that keep it working during situations that you needed it to be. or in simpler terms, resiliency + dependability.

On January 2008 I was on Explorer's Route excursion . On 22 of January my K10D with Sigma 100-300 was totally wet. It stoped working when I returned to ship. On next day morning it started to work again and is ok till now!

I know it is thread about 16-50, but if you want to see some shots from that day South Georgia Photo Gallery by Piotr Sobolewski at pbase.com
