These lenses in this order:

1) DA * 16-50
2) DA * 50-135
3) DA 55-300

The rest of the lenses I use in isolated situations, but don't end up walking around with them.

I tend to shoot either either wide or long:

1) DA 12-24
2) DA* 300
3) A 35-105

I've recently acquired a K 28/3.5 which might just displace the 35-105 for 3rd, as the 28 is wider and sharper with better color.

1. SMC Pentax A 35mm F/2
1. Sigma Super Wide (A) 24mm F/2.8
3. Vivitar (A) 100mm F/2.8 macro

Two number one's, since they are about equal.

After much agonising and several changes of mind, this is the finally pared-down list I am taking on my upcoming 3-week tour of the Pyrenees. I shall probably take the SMC Pentax A 50mm F/1.4 also, so its four most used lenses really.

Is it cheating to divide between digital and film, since when digital came along I switched from wide angle to telephoto.

Digital
1. SMC 1000/f11 (OK handheld)
2. DA 55-300
3. Equal alternates

Film
1. A 20/f2.8
2. A* 200mm/f4 macro
3. equal alternates

In that order - I could survive on the first two

runners up roughly equal: M50 1.7, DA15
if travelling with other people: FA24-90, or Sig 17-70 plus DA55-300

A fun topic! I did a count for the last 12 months and the results really surprised me. The lens that got used the most during that time is one that I don't think I use all that much normally. But during that time I did take a couple hundred pictures of a brick wall trying to decide whether it was worth sending it in for repair (they replaced it) and it's the lens I usually loan to my other half when he wants to take pictures (he really loves it). I didn't try to break out his shots - it would have been less than 10% of the total number of shots. The second most used lens was the one I expected to be on top.

DA 55-300 (17.93%)
DA*50-135 (16.86%)
DA 12-24 (11.66%)

There were 3 other lenses that were just over 9%, 2 of them I've only owned since August or September (DA 10-17 and DA*300). I was surprised to see them higher than the A series lens number (the 3rd one over 9%) because that's how Lightroom shows both the Viv 105 and the A*300. I think that I take tons of macro, but obviously not a lot in the last year.

Another interesting thing I noticed, I have taken more pictures with the new DA 35 Ltd in the month that I've owned it than I took all last year with the FA 77 Ltd, one of my very favorite lenses. I knew I didn't use it all that much but I didn't realize it was that little. It's always in my camera bag, while the DA*300 isn't.

Definitely an interesting, eye-opening exercise, I'm glad you brought this topic up.

Currently, the most used are the two lenses that are always in my bag

1) DA35 Macro Ltd
2) DA55-300

Third is either Sigma 10-20, Tamron 90/2.8 Macro or Tamron SP 500 mirror.

I'm so happy with these, that I seldom take my manual primes out of the closet anymore

Pentax DA*50-135
Vivitar Series 1 15mm Macro

I think I'm probably duplicating someone's list, but...

DA * 16-50
DA 55-300
FA 50mm f2.8 macro

We've seen the combination of wide and tele-zoom many times now on this list. While I still fight focus hunting on low contrast with the DA* lens, the paring of that lens with the 50-300 means I cover pretty much anything while on a vacation trip.

The FA50 2.8 macro is WONDERFUL glass, so useful in so many ways that it is often the first prime I reach for.

regards,

germar

Very interesting reading....
  • FA 31
  • DA 12-24
  • DA 10-17
I would have never suspected that the 31 would be such a useful wide angle lens. The 12-24 is just wonderful, and there are times in the evening where you need only a single frame where stitching will not work - so its the 10-17. I am working on making my Nodal Ninja easier to mount and excited to try to use the 50-300 in some different ways...

Wonderful thread....
