Be the judge; Mamiya-Sekor 55mm 1.4 vs Super-Takumar 50mm 1.4

Here is a test I ran today of an early 8-element version 50mm Takumar versus the also highly sought after early Mamiya-Sekor 55mm. To note, The Mamiya-Sekor could not focus to infinity at anything below f16. Might be a problem with my specific lens, not sure. You guys be the judge

All photos were taken with a Pentax K100d

The two lenses up against the jury:

Outdoor shots at F2.8 for the Super Tak first, and the Mamiya second. Unfortunately the sun just started to go away for the Mamiya shot.

Inside test shots at F1.4 for the Super Tak first and the Mamiya second.

100% crops from the test above.

Don't think it's much of a surprise that the Super tak has wiped the floor with the Mamiya in this test.

^Yep sure did. I suspected as much, and when I got the chance to pick up the Mamiya for cheap on fleabay I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Funny how these Mamiya lenses usually fetch a larger price than the super taks on there.

From a statistical perspective, I'd throw out your results due to observer bias and small sample size. Buy 6 copies of each and have a a canon guy and nikon guy run a series of tests or send them to Rice Rockwell and/or Ken High for evaluation.

These results don't particularly surprise me, though I would have thought that things would have evened up by f/2.8. The M/S 55/1.4 is a very good lens and there are several users on this forum who swear by it. OTOH, the S-Tak 50/1.4, is stationed in the highest tier of the normal lens pantheon based on its legendary performance. One of these days I should do a similar test of the M/S 55/1.8 vs. the Pentax-K 55/1.8. I might even throw in the Helios 44M 58/2 and Rikenon 50/1.8 in as well just for giggles.

Steve

BTW...Your lack of infinity focus with the M/S 55/1.4 may be an indication of a repair attempt gone bad and may be related to the poor showing for the lens.

The Super Tak 50mm f1.4 version 1 wasn't dubbed the Panar Killer for nothing!
