It seems only the limiteds, and even then only some of them have competitive prices locally (DA15 isnít competitive for example), seems all other Pentax lenses are ~ 1/3 or more cheaper from B&H even with shipping on a single lens basis.

My likely next purchase will be a DA*50-135. Locally the best price I can get is $1,490. From B&H itís under $1,000 landed.
How did you manage those JB-HiFi and Camera House deals, twitch? All I've seen SLR-wise in my local JB-HiFi (Camberwell) is one or two entry level bodies with kit lens. I've got the DA*16-50 and DA*50-135, but I still lust after limiteds.

My experience

I bought my K200 with DA18-55 from Ted's in Camberwell in mid 2008. They had an extremely good deal advertised in the Green Guide, I think. $699? something like that.
I bought an FA50 1.4 from DCW on the internet and a DA50-200 from the DCW store in Northcote. I wanted it in a hurry just before Christmas.
I bought my DA*50-135 used from a forum member.
Then I got bold and bought my DA*16-50 from B&H. Brilliant service. After I'd bought it but before the charge appeared on my credit card, I discovered that DCW had the lens on special at $999. Mine cost me $993. I saved a huge $7. It pays to look out for specials
Since then I've bought my DA55-300 from B&H and my BG3 camera grip from Amazon (USA). Remember that deal where they were selling BG3s for $US35 but they wouldn't ship to Oz? When you got to the payment part with the shipping address, you got a message to say that they were out of stock. The trick is to have a shipping address in the USA with a freight forwarding company that specialises in small packages for expat Americans.
I would love to buy locally, but not if I have to spend 50% more. It's not just cameras. I bought a pair of Campagnolo Eurus wheels for my bike a few months ago. The best price in Oz was around $1,600. I bought them from Northern Ireland for around $735 total. Local bike stores can't buy them for that price.

I haven't been flush with cash to get a new lens for some time.

Although i am going to be selling a 17-35 and 28-70 ... just to go down to a single 17-70 (save spaces and less swapping of lenses. And from what i have seen so far ... DCW is cheaper to get it from than overseas. And even cheaper than 2nd hand in most cases.

Although I nearly fell over in shock when i saw the price of the DA15 ... there's no way in hell I'd be purchasing that from here.

All my lenses bar one are from B&H

They are cheaper and deliver to my door from the USA...they deliver usually withing 4 days from placement of order.

Awesome service and great prices

Oz prices make no sense!

There seems to be no consistent correlation between US and OZ prices so it definitely pays to do the research. The 15 Ltd is case in point, about dbl the price if you buy Oz. But if you are looking at the 14 f2.8, it is competitive????? Makes no sense???

If pentaxians unite and use this price research to get CRK to price match through their local dealer, perhaps we can look forward to a future that is err umm, simpler and more supportive of local businesses?

PS - in my mind at pre-purchase time also is the complexity of the bit of gear ..... lenses with SDM, more things to go wrong, nice to have a shop/dealer nearby IMHO.

I have ordered two lenses for my new K7, I ordered from Teds....

1x Lens I got Teds to price match via the web Pentax 100mmMacro WR. They agreed to the $679AUD price no problems, The Adorama price is $699 USD. So i just went with the best local price on that.

I got CRK to price match the other one DA-55-300mm with grey/usa prices, and ordered them both through Teds. Awaiting delivery this week hopefully. The USA price was over $200 better than i could find locally on the other.

So Yeah it seems prices vary and fluctuate and USA prices aren't always the best, but more often than not.

I agree with both 2 posts. The lens prices in Oz are not always consistent. 6 months ago, it was nearly 30% cheaper to order lenses from North-America: I got lenses from Adorama.com and keh.com.

But in the last 2 months, I checked the prices of Tamron, Sigma and Voigtlander lenses: they were better deals in Australia. In addition, the local store can often give you an extra discount when you go in person.

the rest of my kit have been bought from BHphoto/Adorama. Heaps cheaper and shipping is faster, which still astounds me.

Just ask. Any of the camera shops can get in any of the limiteds, with the possible exception of the DA15 which for some reason doesn't seem to be on their price lists. The DA15 is only available form DCW but for an very high price, at B&H it's actually cheaper than the DA21.

For the DA40 I simply asked JB-HiFi what price they could do the lens for, they said "$370" I said "Deal!". I didn't even negotiate.

For the DA70 I asked their best price, they said "$570", I said "I can get it from overseas delivered for $535 and I'll give you cash right now if you match that", they said "OK".

I'm not that good a negotiator, but always go in armed with information on the best price, ask what their best price is, and then play my "trump card" of telling where I can buy it from for what price and ask them to match, and tell them I am prepared to buy there and then.

For the zooms though they couldn't even get close, so I walked away and purchased from B&H.

In fact I have a DA*50-135 winging it's way to me from B&H right now

yeah, JB hifi will let you haggle, i got my k10d + 16-45 for about $200 less than any other local store/shopbot.com/staticice.com.

michael's in elizabeth st (melb cbd) also lets you pricematch. i pricematched the lumix lx3 against DCW's internet price..

HAGGLE HAGGLE HAGGLE. they'd rather have you buy from them than from competition.
and for shit and giggles, i got ted's to pricematch the fa50mm 1.4 against an online store price, and i think it was grey import. i didn't get the lens though because i already have the 50mm.

offtopic.. i'm so glad i bought my 50-135 two years ago, AU$900 delivered, from bhphoto.

twitch, does jbhifi carry FA lenses? i haven't been there in ages and i'm after the FA43..

I generally get all my bigger purchases through DigiDirect, their Bondi Junction store has great staff that are really helpful and always throw in a good discount for me. Prices generally beat a lot of online stores when you factor in shipping. They stock a fair range of Pentax gear on the shelves which a lot of others don't..
I used to get some stuff from JB-HiFi but they don't have any Pentax on the shelves at the stores I visit, so I only really get general stuff like SD cards from them.

I just ordered a DA21 for $660 from JB. Not a great price, about the same as B&H landed. Camera House wouldn't match it, they said their cost was $660 before GST.

I ended up getting the Sigma 30/1.4 from a Hong Kong store on Ebay for $505 posted. I'm happy enough with that.

I bought my DA* 16-55 from RYDA.com.au which sells Aussie stock with genuine Aussie warranty (from CRK's i think). They were cheaper than the HK based DWI which has gray imports but has a outlet in Aus.
