Sigma 8-16mm Review

Hi everyone, I don't get to these forums much (mostly on DPR), but need to get over here more.

I wrote a review for the 8-16mm here:
http://erphotoreview.com

I have resolution test charts, distortion, and lots of full size samples.

Overall I think it is a great lens, but it has a significant amount of barrel distortion at 8mm, and some corner softness through the range (worst at 8mm). The lack of filters is a valid turn off for some users (especially those that need dark ND filters for long exposures). My preference is for the 8-16mm first, 10-20mm f/4-5.6 second, and 10-20mm f/3.5 third, but others might differ.

Also, I have a brief review at Amazon, vote if you find it helpful or not!
Amazon.com: E. J Tastad "ejt"'s review of Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM FLD AF Ultra...

Thanks, and I hope to bring more reviews. I will create a review for the lens on this site as well.

Eric

Thanks in advance for posting a review in our database! If the lens isn't already listed, keep in mind users are free to add lenses using the link in the upper-right

Thanks! I didn't know I can add lenses, was looking to see if I could earlier. I will take some photos of the lens itself tonight and see if I can't get something up

And I'll add to my to do list that the 'add lens' feature should be made more visible Thanks!

I notice this lens does not have the EX classification that Sigma puts on its top-line, most-rugged lenses. With Sigma QC an issue for some, I wonder if the lack of the EX designation matters in this case. Just wondering. Can any owners of this lens discuss its build quality compared with EX lenses?

I find it is better built than most EX lenses. It is built more like the 100-300mm f/4 EX or maybe the 10-20mm f/3.5 EX (haven't handled this one specifically). It has internal focus window, gear reduction in focus ring, quick-shift/full time manual focus ring (a feature lacking on many EX lenses).

EX seems to be reserved for constant aperture glass in the newer lenses. So even though this is better built than say an 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM, it doesn't get the EX as it is f/4.5-5.6. The only part that feels slightly cheap is the AF/MF switch by the mount that is mounted on a plastic plate. The only other explanation I could see for the lack of EX designation is the lack of filter support (which a pro might want).

Lens Cap Modification

Here is a quick lens cap modification to replace the pinch style cap from the filter ring that is not useful for this lens (the filters will vignette heavily at any focal length).

I ordered a 72mm filter protector from seller Heavystar on eBay and used the top 72mm cap in place of the Sigma center pinch cap.

I suggest using the Sigma 72mm cap on a Rokinon/Samyang/Vivitar/etc 85mm f/1.4 lens. It is much better quality than the stock cap from those

Like i said elsewhere - Discontinued. This from both B&H and Adorama. Probably just the Pentax version. Grrrr!

Looks like Amazon still has a couple of sellers who have it available. Also, Sigma's web site still lists it as available for k mount.

I know. I grabbed one off of Amazon last week. I saw that Sigma still listed it, but like I say, B&H canceled my order, and Adorama says it's discontinued. I figured that I was hearing enough peculiar things to justify buying one quickly just in case.

Would it not be shocking if this were not true?

Get a large ND gel and hold it in front of lens.
