Cheapest alternative to the Pentax 17-70mm?

I've been in and out of photography for the past year or two and it seems I won't be seriously pursuing this as a hobby in the forseeable future.

I've sold all my lenses already and what I'm looking for right now is a lens with a nice range (wide to short-tele) to use with my K100D.

The Pentax 17-70 is what I'm looking for but it's expensive and I don't want to blow a considerable amount of money on this.

There are also the Sigma 17-70 and Tamron 17-50 that I could consider, but could anyone suggest the cheapest alternative I could find?

Thanks!

Have you considered the infamous 18-55 or 16-45 solutions?
Plenty good enough to use and not nearly as expensive a solution when you think about it.

tamron 18-50 f2.8 is a great lens, and you can probably find a used one for like 375ish.

I went with the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX and I'm very happy with it. Got one used but in rather pristine condition from Adorama for around $300.

comparing this to the Sigma 17-70, would this mean that sacrificing the Sigma's range for the Tamron's speed is worth it?

Does anyone think I'd be missing that 50-70 range?

The Sigma is a fanbtastic jack or all trades. If you don't need a constant f2,8, it is the most balanced lens (close-up, range, speed). Extremely reliable with great IQ.

The Pentax 17-70 is also a great choice, but not warranting the higher price tag IMHO.

The Tamron 17-50 has a shorter reach but a faster aperture at the tele end. It's supposed to be very good too.

Only you can desice which features are important.

I don't think any lens 55mm or less in focal length is completely an alternative to the DA 17-70mm f4 lens. Otherwise, the venerable F 35-70mm f3.5-4.5 or FA 28-70mm f4 lenses should be considered (or the FA* 28-70mm/2.8).

I decided that for my sold AF lens to go to Pentax but I won't something that could go from wide to short tele. The 16-50mm didn't go to the tele end but it is f2.8 and WR. However, the 17-70 goes to 70 and is considerable cheaper.

Therefore, the true alternatives to the DA 17-70mm are going to have to be Tammy or Sigma, and I personally would lean towards the Sigma 17-70mm.

I think that you're the only one who can answer that.

For me, the 70mm is very helpful when shooting candids of people; I don't have to get in their face to get close enough.

I would like to recomend the Sigma 17-70mm. it has a very nice focal range. the F/2.8 at 18mm comes handy in low light situations. It is wide enough for indoors and a medium reach for outside. It goes around $320 used. I believe it is a new version (HSM), a little bit more expensive

Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8 EX is a discontinued lens, can be had for a bargain.
Might not be wide enough for you though.
