Stick w/ Kit Lens or Rental??

I've been asked to take some snaps for a family party this weekend and am wondering if my kit lens will be suitable. I was thinking of renting a wide zoom like the 12-24 or Sigma 10-20, but CLR has both lenses rented out for the day I need. The 16-45 and 16-50 are both available (as I type), but...not sure if I shouldn't just stick with my kit lens...

...Yea? ...Nay? Input appreciated

I have the Kit and the 10-20mm, frankly as much as I like the 10-20 it is a bit wide (at 10mm there is a fair amount of distortion) and more importantly slow for interior shots without flash. I would probably stick with the kit as it has less distortion and is a bit more versatile in my opinion.

If you are comfortable with flash (external is best) the onboard using TV mode and running around 1/30-1/15 can get you some nice shot with either lens.

Unless you plan on making large prints, you should be fine with the kit lens. Although if you're going to be taking a lot of portraits, I would think you would need something tighter rather than wider.

I stopped by the location and asked how things were going to be set up. I was considering the wider zooms in case things got too tight and I wouldn't be able to take a few steps back, but I do suppose 18mm will be wide enough.

I suppose a setup a the 18-55, FA 35 and 50, plus EF500 Super will be all, it not more than I really need after all. Any excuse to play with different toys gets the imagination going, I guess

I don't think you will need anything wider than 18mm. You kit lens will do just fine and you can save some $ by not renting.

Hey with the $ you save maybe you can buy a new lens. Haha

I think you can get by with just the 18-55, flash, and maybe a tripod.

Well, that was part of my logic in favor of renting: try before I buy!

I've been taking some feeler shots w/ the kit lens @ 18-35, and it'll do well enough.
